POSITION SUMMARY

The Ophthalmic Technician is responsible for providing the highest quality ophthalmic patient care possible. The Ophthalmic Technician performs patient histories, completes requested ophthalmic testing and consistently provides superior customer service for the patients. The Ophthalmic Technician ensures the proper utilization of time and movement of the patient throughout the patient visit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    High school diploma or GED requiredBachelor Degree or Associate Degree in a related field highly preferredTwo (2) years of ophthalmology experience preferredMust complete the home study ophthalmic program within six months of Prefer COT Certification

    Must have proficient computer skillsMust be able to problem solveMust have excellent communication skills, proper grammar, and writing capabilityMust be team-orientedMust be self-directed, highly motivated, able to multi-task, and work under pressure in a fast-paced environmentMust be able to handle multiple projects at one time accurately and efficientlyMust have exceptional interpersonal skillsMust possess a caring, patient, and friendly attitudeMust have a complete knowledge of all forms (paper & electronic) that are used in the practiceMust have an understanding of the anatomy & physiology of the eyeMust have an understanding of ophthalmic terminology, spelling, and pronunciationMust have an understanding of CPT and ICD-9/10 codes for ophthalmic billing

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Consistently performs proper documentation of case history, confrontation visual fields, pupil evaluation, screening extra-ocular muscle function, visual acuity, assessment of angle depth, instillation of diagnostic pharmaceutical agents, amsler grid and other functions as directed by the clinical physicianObtains eyeglass prescriptions via lensometerPerforms patient testing accurately and effectively as directed by the clinical provider(s) i.e. Slit Lamp Exam, PAMS, Visual Fields, Color Test, Tonometry, OCT’s, Fundus Photos, etc.If assigned to an ophthalmologist: must be able to refract within +/- .50 dioptersIf assigned to a retina specialist: assists retina physician(s) with intraocular injections as neededEffectively communicates physician instructions to patients and documents accordinglyAssists the physician with pharmacy calls, patient calls, etc.Ensures the scheduling template is being followed correctlyEnsures all patient lanes are clean and well-stocked at the end of each dayEnsures all equipment is turned off and covered properly at the end of dayCompletes tech station duties on a daily basisCall in Rx’s – Only certified ophthalmic techs can ERx. The exception is the tech can ERx if scribing for a doctor and the script is done under the doctor’s nameMust have an understanding of sterile techniqueProfessional and Personal Development/Goals and ObjectivesExhibits professional demeanor with a positive enthusiastic attitude at all times when representing the practiceMaintains certification, where applicable, and continues to improve skills. Must attend in-services and webinar training seminars as directed by the Clinical ManagerSets goals and objectives for professional growth. Reviews and revises goals on an ongoing basisProvides input on how to improve customer service, decrease costs and increase revenues for the practice
Customer ServiceSupports the practice core values and mission statement to develop, enhance, and promote quality customer service through team effortExhibits flexibility, sensitivity and respect while maintaining an effective working relationship with all team membersMaintains practice confidentiality, follows HIPAA guidelinesFollows the rules and regulations of the practice as documented in the practice employee manualCompletes any additional tasks and responsibilities as noted in the pay for performance programMaintains proper work-up standards of productivity as defined by physician requirements, patient diagnosis, and Clinical ManagerAssumes other duties as assigned
