Position Summary:
The underwriting department is responsible for ensuring that each department remains compliant with underwriting guidelines, carrier standards, and company policies, while maintaining high levels of accuracy, efficiency, and customer satisfaction. The Underwriter will be responsible for evaluating, analyzing, and underwriting commercial auto risks, ensuring compliance with carrier guidelines while maintaining profitability. This role requires a strong background in commercial auto underwriting, sound judgment, and the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with agents and carriers.
Essential Duties / Responsibilities:
- Maintain goals and objectives for each subdivision and ensure alignment with company expectations.
- Hold each manager and team lead accountable for meeting departmental goals and performance benchmarks.
- Conduct weekly meetings within the subdivisions to ensure processes are running smoothly and expectations are being met.
- Develop and refine workflows to improve efficiency, accuracy, and turnaround times.
- Identify performance challenges and implement operational improvements across all departments.
- Help to identify growth opportunities and assess market expansion needs.
- Partner with the marketing team to discuss business development strategies and potential agency incentives.
- Collaborate with claims and department managers to review trends, enhance process management, and prevent recurring issues.
- Oversee monthly department reports, consolidating findings and presenting insights to senior management.
- Work closely with agencies and internal departments to resolve ongoing issues and ensure service standards are met.
- Meet with carriers quarterly to maintain strong relationships, review expectations, and discuss performance.
- Conduct monthly internal discussions regarding industry or carrier changes and communicate updates to the team.
- Ensure all policies, processes, and departmental practices comply with state regulations, carrier guidelines, and company standards.
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of industry regulations, carrier requirements, and underwriting guidelines.
- Communicate all regulatory and carrier changes to relevant departments in a timely manner.
- Partner with all departments to resolve issues and ensure adherence to company standards.
- Provide senior management with clear and concise reporting on department performance, issues, and resolutions.
- Facilitate cross‑department communication to support efficiency, accuracy, and consistent workflow execution.
- Prepare and analyze departmental performance reports, including productivity metrics, trends, error rates, and turnaround times.
- Consolidate monthly reports from all departments and present findings, insights, and recommendations to senior leadership.

- Risk assessment -- Strong ability to utilize data to analyze risk, determining what can be minimized or how to price accordingly.
- Oral Communication -- Ability to clearly communicate expectations, feedback, and complex underwriting concepts to department managers, carriers, and senior leadership.
- Written Communication -- Ability to prepare clear, concise reports, documentation, and written correspondence for internal teams, carriers, and senior management.
- Interpersonal Skills -- Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with department managers, carriers, and cross-functional teams while addressing issues professionally.

Minimum Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Insurance, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
- Minimum of 5–7 years of experience in commercial insurance underwriting, preferably within trucking or transportation insurance.
- Proven experience managing or overseeing multiple departments or functional teams.
- Strong working knowledge of commercial auto liability, binding, renewals, audits, and carrier guidelines.
- Experience ensuring compliance with state regulations and carrier underwriting requirements.
- Proficiency in underwriting systems, policy management platforms, and reporting tools.
Preferred:
- Advanced underwriting certifications (e.g., CPCU, AU, ARM, or similar).
- Prior experience in a Managing General Agency (MGA) or specialty insurance environment.
- Demonstrated experience working directly with carriers and negotiating underwriting expectations.
- Experience supporting business growth initiatives and market expansion strategies.
- Track record of automating and streamlining risk review processes.
- Proven ability to leverage data in risk analysis and strategic decision making.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Continually required to sit for extended periods.
- Moderate noise level typical of a professional office environment.
- Required on site.
- Office-based with standard business hours.
- Limited travel required for vendor, carrier, or regulatory meetings.
Standard business hours are from 9am-6pm.
