Principal Technologist

Salary Grade: G04
Minimum Midpoint Maximum
$110,004 - $148,506 - $187,007

Personnel in this job title may be covered by NERC CIP cyber security standards. If the position is covered, prior to being hired, promoted, or transferred into the position, the candidate must successfully pass a Personnel Risk Assessment, which includes identity verification and a criminal background check. Prior to being granted unescorted access to cyber secure areas, the candidate must attend cyber security training. Annual cyber security training is also required.
SUMMARY:

Serves as a Principal Technologist for the organization in the application of advanced theories, concepts, technical architectures, principles and processes. Plans and develops technical architectures and architectural patterns, strategies and projects concerned with unique and/or potentially sensitive issues by performing the following duties.

Principal Technologists possess special knowledge and experience or are unique in their value to the Company. This level of technologist is for those individuals whose technical/professional responsibilities are significant enough to warrant a salary level comparable to Management level jobs. Promotion to a Principal Technologist requires that the need for this level of technologist exists, that market data supports placement at this level and approval by a Vice President.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides technology expertise associated with complex technical integration and projects.

Leads or conducts performance, cost, and technology evaluations, integrations and architectures.

Coordinates the assessment of emerging technologies. Evaluates and may recommend new products or tools for the organization.

Provides in depth technical expertise and architectural oversight of various technologies including infrastructure, end user computing, telecommunications and networking and cyber-security.

Communicates complex and sometimes unconventional technical ideas, recommendations and evaluations to technical and non-technical groups, in both formal and informal settings.

Represents the Companys interests on diverse and sometimes highly technical matters.

Provides comprehensive and often complex technical expertise and interaction to other associates.

Applies extensive and advanced technologies to improve or develop new standards for diverse technical activities.

Provides the required high-level technical direction of an area expert and/or an activity supervisor to contractors and Company personnel on a regular, on-going basis.

Plans, organizes and directs or supervises the work of staff technologists, other information technology professionals.

Evaluates the progress and results of technical projects and provides the necessary training or recommends the changes necessary to achieve area objectives.

COMPETENCIES:

Highly specialized and unique knowledge in information technology. Generally includes extensive technical knowledge and experience across various technical disciplines, including infrastructure, end user computing, telecommunications and networking and cyber-security.

Proven ability to apply architectural and technological principles, best practices and regulations and to perform economic and decision analysis studies of complex issues in information technology in areas including, including infrastructure, end user computing, telecommunications and networking and cyber-security.

Demonstrate good leadership skills, be self-motivated, and have good interpersonal skills.

Ability to technical concepts and architectural best practices to utility application for improving system reliability.

Comfortable working in and around high voltage (up to 345kV) electrical facilities and equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Bachelors Degree in Information Technology from a college/university, plus 10 or more years of technical architecture experience, with seven to nine years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience related to the discipline.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:

Must possess current, legally valid drivers license and meet the Companys driving record requirements.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents.

Ability to coordinate the activities of diverse groups across multiple cultures and geographies

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence, write speeches, and presentations.

Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, employees, and managers of the organization.

COMPUTER SKILLS:

Working knowledge of database, inventory, spreadsheet, and word processing software

ANALYSIS AND PROBLEM-SOLVING ABILITY:

Ability to solve complex practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit up to 2/3 of the time. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
