Position Summary:
The University of New Mexico (UNM) seeks a dynamic, innovative,results-oriented, and proven leader for the position of Director of theCenter for Advanced Research Computing (CARC), one of UNM's premierstrategic research centers. The selected candidate will report directly to theVice President for Research (VPR) and will be open rank determined by the individual's academic background.
CARC is an internationally recognized center ofexcellence in advanced computing systems with a long history of research,innovation, and service in computing systems and computational science. Thecenter's mission is to facilitate cross-disciplinary computational research atUNM and nation-wide by leading multi-disciplinary research and educationalinitiatives and by providing advanced computing services to the Universitycommunity. CARC supported research at UNM includes faculty, staff, and studentsfrom many departments, colleges, research centers, and campuses, including theSchool of Engineering, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of FineArts, the Quantum New Mexico Institute, and the UNM Health Sciences Center.CARC also actively collaborates with faculty and staff across campus and atSandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories in educational initiatives to trainthe next generation of computational experts through programs such as theUniversity's Computational Science and Engineering graduate certificateprogram.
Tofacilitate and execute research and superb educational opportunities in advancedresearch computing, CARC supports high performance and data intensive computingfacilities used by the entire UNM community[GT1] .These resources, managed directly by CARC staff, include multiple computeclusters that include state-of-the-art GPU resources, dedicated enterprise andhigh-performance storage systems, high-speed networking systems, and a widerange of software packages for use by the community of UNM researchers,including traditional scientific computing applications, state-of-the-art dataanalytics and machine learning systems. These systems are housed in CARC'sdedicated research data center with multiple UPS systems and cooling systems;UNM is also in the process of upgrading these facilities to support additionalcomputing systems to support emerging research in AI and quantum computing. - Prepare and implement a strategic vision and plan for CARC
- Enhance CARC's portfolio of external funding by facilitating and catalyzing interdisciplinary computational research by UNM faculty and the acquisition of grants and contracts awarded to support this research
- Supervise CARC staff, projects, operations, facilities, and activities, including those that pertain to research administration functions and compliance with University, State, and Federal policies and regulations
- Fully integrate CARC's research mission with graduate and undergraduate educational programs across UNM as well as outreach efforts to New Mexico schools and communities
- Establish active collaborative research partnerships both within the University (e.g., other departments, centers, and institutes) and with strategic partners outside the university (e.g., national laboratories, industry partners, economic development agencies)
- Represent CARC to the University and external communities at all levels
- Participate in VPR's Research Council to help develop and implement Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) initiatives and provide input and feedback to the OVPR leadership team
- Mentor early career investigators, post-docs, and students in developing research programs that fit within CARC's mission
- Prepare, oversee, and serve as responsible agent for the CARC budget, including oversight on sponsored projects, facilities usage, and staff compensation exercises
- Provide regular operational and planning reports to the VPR (monthly and yearly) and internal and external advisory boards (biannually and yearly, respectively)
- Establish a vibrant and well-funded collaborative research enterprise

- Ph.D. (or equivalent/terminal degree) in a relevant field OR a Master's degree in a relevant field plus 2 or more years of experience serving as a PI or Co-PI on a sponsored research project.
- 5 years of experience leading/directing complex computational team research projects or operations
Preferred Qualifications:
- Record of scholarly achievement and innovation in CARC mission-related or relevant areas (primarily advanced computer and computational science, including but not limited to high-performance computing, data-intensive computing, or computationally intensive science or engineering) commensurate with obtaining tenure at a top research university
- Ability to lead a research-based interdisciplinary center and enact (or develop) a clearly articulated strategic vision
- Record of success in securing competitive research funding, including for large, multi-investigator, multi-institutional projects
- Experience with the development, coordination, and integration of interdisciplinary graduate research and educational programs, as well as workforce development at all educational levels
- Experience with leadership and collaboration in interdisciplinary research as well as between universities, national laboratories, and industry partners
- Management experience, including oversight on day-to-day operations of center, research, and/or computing facilities, maintaining budgets, policy and process development and implementation, and supervision of staff
- Experience supervising or collaborating with information technology (IT) experts to deploy and manage computational systems that effectively meet the needs of researchers
- Experience developing and overseeing the enforcement of policies for effective, efficient, and safe management and use of advanced computing systems
- Experience with ensuring compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations, laws, and policies as well as safety policies, practices, and regulations
- A demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities.
- Record of, or potential for, teaching courses in the selected home departments.
