About This Position

Under supervision (Mechanical Technician I) or general supervision (Mechanical Technician II), performs skilled installation, maintenance, and repair of a wide variety of mechanical systems used to treat, transmit, and distribute drinkingwater. These roles will support the maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and optimization of critical mechanical systems and equipment used throughout the water treatment plant, transmission line, pump stations and the solar farm. Performs a wide variety of work on mechanical systems including pumps, motors, valves, actuators, air compressors, generators, plumbing systems, underground construction, vibration/machine condition monitoring, welding/fabrication, mechanical seals, gearboxes, mixers, and pump overhauls.
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
  1. Inspects, installs, repairs, and maintains motors, control systems, chemical feed and storage equipment, pumps, valves, and related water plant and delivery systems equipment.
  1. Troubleshoots and diagnoses operating problems; removes, repairs, replaces and tests assigned equipment; implements and performs preventive maintenance and updates the preventative maintenance database.
  1. Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on the solar tracking equipment, including motors, gear boxes and worm drives.
  1. Perform complete tear-down and overhaul of various types of pumps including vertical turbine, centrifugal, diaphragm, submersible and gear pumps.
  1. Use vibration analysis tools and machine condition monitoring techniques to assess the health and performance of mechanical equipment. Analyze the vibration testing data and provide recommendations for maintenance or corrective action to ensure equipment reliability.
  1. Conduct regular inspection, maintenance and repair of backup generator systems ensuring availability during critical operational periods.
  1. Perform backflow prevention assembly repair, testing, calibration and reporting
  1. Participate in the installation, maintenance and repair of the potable water distribution systems including, line repair, replacement, flushing, disinfecting, testing, pipe cutting, service, ARV and valve installation, replacement and exercising.
  1. Uses test equipment including electronic diagnostic instrumentation, vibration analysis, shaft alignment tools and service, adjusts and tunes various equipment, interprets operating data to complete adjustments.
  1. Installs and works with contractors installing plant or delivery equipment and systems.
  1. Estimates parts and materials required for the work; requisitions or orders replacement parts and materials; recommends and directs contract work as required.
  1. Observes safe work methods and utilizes safety equipment related to the work.
  1. May perform work in confined or potentially dangerous areas with possible exposure to hazardous chemicals.
  1. Read sand interprets schematics, shop manuals, blueprints, and plans in the performance of work assignments.
  1. Inspects, maintains, and performs repairs to minor electrical circuits (less than 50V), motors, pumps, generators, , and other plant equipment and facilities.
  1. Provides technical assistance to other employees on difficult problems; may direct the work of others on a project basis.
  1. Maintains accurate and detailed computer records of work performed and maintenance activities.
  1. Create and update standard operating procedures (SOP’s) for maintenance, repair and operation of equipment.
  1. Builds and maintains positive working relationships with coworkers, other District employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
  1. Performs incidental building trades work including carpentry, painting, concrete and plumbing.
  1. Performs related duties as required.

Mechanical Technician I/II
Basic principles, practices, techniques, tools, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance of mechanical equipment.
Operation and basic maintenance of a variety of hand, power and shop tools, test equipment, and other equipment.
The function and capabilities of common and specialized machine tools and equipment.
Industry safety practices and techniques.
Basic principles of electricity and electronics. Shop mathematics and blueprint reading.
Commonly used desktop computer software, including spreadsheets, word processing, and databases.
Knowledge of confined space entry procedures
Mechanical Technician II:
Principles, practices, techniques, tools, equipment and materials used in the maintenance of varied plant and delivery systems mechanical equipment.
Preventive maintenance scheduling and recordkeeping
Principles of electricity and electronics and their use in mechanical equipment.
Computer software, including spreadsheets, word processing, and databases in the maintenance industry, including work orders, preventive maintenance databases, reports, inventory and cost control functions.
Advanced fabrication, plumbing, pipefitting and equipment repair skills. Ability to:
Mechanical Technician I/II
Learn to perform a variety of skilled mechanical work on stationary equipment, delivery systems, and related facilities found in a water treatment plant.
Install, diagnose, repair and maintain a wide variety of mechanical equipment used in the water treatment and distribution work.
Identify and solve equipment related problems
Read and interpret plans, specifications, manuals and schematics
Use a variety of hand, power and shop tools and test equipment skillfully and safely.
Learn to read and interpret manuals, schematics, plans and specifications. Maintain accurate records of work performed.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Mechanical Technician II:
Perform a variety of skilled mechanical work on stationary equipment, delivery systems, and related facilities found in a water treatment plant.
Analyze complex issues, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions.
Proactively solve problems and address challenges to ensure the uninterrupted operation of mechanical systems.
Independently diagnose process malfunctions and failures.
Conduct job walks and directs the work of others on a project basis.
Estimate material and equipment requirements for proposed work.
Plan and complete work assignments independently
Read and interpret manuals, schematics, plans and specifications.
Maintain accurate records of work performed; submit monthly and quarterly reports.
Welding using ARC, MIG, TIG and wire feed processes/equipment.
