What you will do:
The Fleet Supervisor provides leadership in operations by managing the maintenance and repair programs and supporting the work of other departments. This role is responsible for supervising technical and skilled staff and managing program budgets.
The Fleet Supervisor is provided considerable freedom from both technical and administrative oversight while work is in progress. Incumbents have control over the sequence of assignments and supervise technical, licensed, certified, and skilled subordinates.
Additional information on job responsibilities:
- Plan, organize, schedule, train, evaluate, and inspect the work of subordinates.
- Plan, coordinate, and administer all aspects of assigned program operations, including assessing current program or system status, determining maintenance or growth needs of systems, and working with agencies, community partners, or other stakeholders as required.
- Prepare and develop professional correspondence, reports, policies, procedures, and guidelines ranging from routine to highly technical, regulatory, or statistical reports for citizens, regulators, agencies, elected officials, managers, peers, and subordinates.
- Assist with the preparation and monitoring of annual budgets or assigned program areas.
- Represent the City on committees to provide information on program compliance, funding, policies, and maintenance status, and to offer technical expertise.
- Analyze existing program operations to determine the most appropriate methods of resolving complex maintenance or compliance issues, or system repairs.
- Communicate changes in programs, procedures or priorities to subordinates.
- Ensure safe working conditions, including public safety and the proper handling of equipment in work areas.
- Utilize technical knowledge and provide expertise to address program operations, systems, maintenance, repairs, and policy or procedural development.
- Physical Requirements: lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects with or without accommodation.
- Effectively communicate ideas and information to facilitate understanding and collaboration.
- Receive and accurately interpret detailed information communicated to ensure precise and effective task execution.
- Visual acuity is required to perform tasks such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing, viewing computer screens, extensive reading, conducting visual inspections for small defects, operating machinery (including inspection), using measurement instruments, and assembling or fabricating components at close range.
- Visual acuity is necessary to assess the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of assigned work (e.g., technician duties, inspection).
- Visual acuity is essential for operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
- Work is primarily performed indoors within an office setting but occasionally involve inspecting subordinates work, conducting research, collecting data, or repairing equipment in varying environment, including outdoor weather conditions, and extreme temperatures.
- The shop environment may expose employees to atmospheric conditions, noise, vibration, hazards, and oils.
- Perform other essential duties as assigned.

- Position schedule is Monday-Friday between the hours of 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., or Monday-Thursday between the hours of 6:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

What are the minimum qualifications?
- Must pass the pre-employment background check and drug test (including marijuana).
- Must have an Oregon driver license and a driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standards.
- Associate degree from an accredited college or university in a related field to program assignment (i.e., automotive, business management, engineering, etc.), and five years of supervisory experience in a related field, or any combination of education, experience and training that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the essential job functions.
- Equipment Vehicle Technician Certification (EVT) or ASE Certification in medium/heavy truck maintenance or automotive service required (must have the ability to obtain certification within 6 months of hire and maintain during course of employment.)

Preferred Qualifications (Not required to apply):
- Certified Automotive Fleet Specialist (CAFS) desired.
- Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), highly desired.
- Experience using a fleet management system database (e.g. Assetworks) preferred.
- Fleet experience in a government environment preferred.
What you will bring along:
- Knowledge of principles, methods, and practices of supervision, business and project management;
- Experience in methods, tools/equipment, techniques, and practices used in shop and fleet operations;
- Knowledge of relevant software programs, preventative maintenance and repair, and system failure (electrical, mechanical, etc.) analysis of vehicles and heavy-duty trucks and equipment;
- Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations governing fleet operations;
- Experience in understanding, interpreting, and applying laws, codes, regulations, and contract documents;
- Knowledge of budgetary and financial procedures and practices;
- Experience in analyzing and evaluating complex technical, operational, and regulatory issues, developing and evaluating alternatives, reaching sound conclusions, and developing effective recommendations and solutions;
- Experience in researching, collecting, analyzing, and integrating data from various sources, applying expert professional concepts in their analyses, preparing and presenting statistical analysis and reports;
- Experience working independently and making decisions concerning multiple City operations and programs with minimal supervision;
- Experience in evaluating the utilization of personnel, materials, and equipment and recommending revisions to assignments and procedures;
- Experience in public speaking and presenting technical information to non-technical audiences;
- Knowledge of contemporary office practices, procedures, and various office software products or systems;
- Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with individuals, coworkers, other agencies, and the public;
- Experience communicating effectively to a wide range of individuals.
