Job Description
Position Summary:
The Mental Health Intake Specialist serves as the first point of contact for individuals seeking behavioral health services. This position is responsible for conducting initial screenings, coordinating client intake and referrals, gathering demographic and clinical information, and ensuring a welcoming and supportive experience for all clients. The Intake Specialist works closely with clinical and administrative teams to facilitate timely access to care and ensure that services are aligned with the client’s needs and eligibility.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct intake interviews with clients and families to gather information on mental health history, current symptoms, basic needs, and service goals.
Administer screening tools and assessments to determine appropriate level of care and eligibility for specific programs.
Collaborate with clinical staff to assign clients to appropriate therapists, support services, or external referrals.
Maintain accurate and confidential documentation in the electronic health record (EHR) system.
Explain program services, policies, and consent forms to clients in a clear and compassionate manner.
Coordinate scheduling for initial appointments and follow-ups, ensuring minimal delays in service delivery.
Identify emergency needs or crisis situations and connect clients with appropriate crisis intervention services.
Support referral processes for services such as housing, primary care, or substance use treatment.
Participate in case review meetings and team huddles to support continuity of care.
Ensure compliance with HIPAA and agency confidentiality policies.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or related field required; master’s degree preferred.
Experience in behavioral health, social services, or a related setting strongly preferred.
Knowledge of trauma-informed care and culturally responsive engagement strategies.
Strong communication, interviewing, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to manage sensitive information with professionalism and discretion.
Proficiency in using electronic health records (EHR) and basic office software.
Bilingual (Spanish/English or other language) preferred but not required.
