Position Summary:
The Unit Secretary provides organizational, receptionist and clerical support to the patient care areas. This position responds to multiple alarm systems. They communicate information accurately in a pleasant and efficient manner to a variety of people, including, but not limited to, patients, visitors, nursing and medical staff, and other departments.
Position Requirements:
- Licensure/Certification/Registrations: Current BLS for Healthcare Providers certification required.
- Education: High School Graduate or equivalent required. Medical terminology course preferred.
- Experience: 1–2 years of experience in a patient care setting required; 1–2 years of Unit Secretary experience preferred. Experience with telemetry systems preferred.
- Skills & Abilities: Must have knowledge of Medical Terminology and strong computer skills. Able to communicate calmly and clearly while demonstrating patience and tact in dealing with coworkers, patients and visitors. Prioritizes customer service skills for internal and external customers. Able to organize work while remaining flexible towards changing demands and encountering and tolerating many interruptions. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Must have good written communication skills and strong attention to detail. Highly motivated with a positive attitude.
Essential Functions:
- Serve as unit receptionist, greeting individuals and handling incoming and outgoing telephone calls, utilizing knowledge of the department. Relay pertinent information to appropriate person(s) and maintain patient and employee confidentiality. Provide excellent customer service to both external and internal customers in person and on the telephone.
- Provide clerical support to nursing including but not limited to, preparing and maintaining patient medical records, maintaining current Kardex for all patients, transcribing all provider orders timely and accurately, and documenting pertinent data accurately and neatly while safeguarding confidential information.
- Answer patient call lights promptly and courteously and refer urgent requests to RN immediately.
- Demonstrate knowledge of ordering and retrieving lab and radiology data
- Order and maintain supplies in various unit locations as directed.
- Responsible for maintaining the patient census, accounting for admissions, transfers and discharges.
- Educate and train new employees in appropriate clerical and transcription duties as needed.

Salary Range: $18.65/ Hour - $25.58/ Hour + Shift Differentials
