About This Position
Job Summary:
The Surgical Technician I position requires proficient knowledge and skills necessary to carry out delegated non-nursing duties associated with quality, safe, and efficient intraoperative care.
The Surgical Technician I is directly accountable to Specialty Coordinator/Manager/Director of Surgical Services and performs non nursing tasks under the direction and request of the Circulating Nurse.
- Assist with preparation of the operating room for surgery
- Obtain necessary equipment and supplies for assigned cases.
- Function within the sterile field to first scrub or assist the surgeon as assigned.
- Assist with post case care of equipment and supplies.
- Demonstrate ability to recognize patient’s individual needs and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
- Responsible for the care and safety of patients under their care. i.e. participating in each timeout for each case and performing counts according to policy.
- Maintain all HealthStream assignments prior to deadlines.
- Participate in all competencies planned for the job role prior to deadlines.
- Participates in the maintenance and updating of surgeon preference cards.
Performance Expectations:
Performance expectations will be covered in the orientation and precepted phases of orientation to job.
- Demonstrate aptitude to work in all subspecialties of Orthopedics in the Operating Room maintaining proper sterile technique while first scrubbing and/or assisting the surgeon.
- Demonstrate the aptitude for safely positioning patients in a variety of required ways using a full range of positioning devices inclusive of yellow fin stirrups, OSI/Jackson frames, peg boards, bean bags, fracture tables, Wilson frames, Hana table, Guardian hip scope attachment
- Demonstrate knowledge of assigned case and all types of surgical sterile equipment including assembly i.e.; electrocautery, bipolars, microscopes, debriders, drills, saws, retractors, MAKO, etc.
- Demonstrate ability to comply with policy and procedure as it relates to specimen handling, surgical counts, and safety precautions in the sterile field
- Comply with safety precautions when transferring patients and equipment
- Demonstrate ability to drape the patient or equipment using the strictest of sterile technique
- Demonstrate the ability to recognize breaks in technique in him/herself and other members of the sterile team and correct and report appropriately
- Demonstrate teamwork in daily routine of room turnover, pulling cases, surgical room preparation for next day’s cases, and assisting where assigned as needed displaying a positive attitude.
- Embraces and practices WE CARE philosophy in all aspects of patient, visitor, co-worker, employee, and non-employee interactions. Adhere to Surgical Services polices regarding attire and attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Timely reporting of preference card changes to avoid waste during procedures.
Qualifications:
Education/Skills
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Associate’s Degree from Surgical Technologist accredited program or on-the-job training with minimum of five years documented experience required.
Work Experience:
- One year of surgical technician experience preferred.
Certification/Licenses
- Basic Life Support – within 30 days of employment
