Position Overview:

The GIS Project and Data Engineer serves as the tactical anchor for the project lifecycle, ensuring seamless communication between field operations and GIS systems. This role combines hands-on technical management of As-Built drawings and CAD files with the organizational discipline required to track deliverables and maintain company standards. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented professional capable of navigating the bridge between engineering design and geospatial data integrity.

Role and Responsibilities

Technical Integration & Data Governance

  • CAD-to-GIS Harmonization: Audit AutoCAD files for technical compliance and execute the precise translation of data between CAD and ESRI environments.
  • Geospatial Integrity: Apply a strong understanding of projections and coordinate systems to ensure all data aligns with Arcadian internal geodatabases.
  • As-Built Validation: Act as the primary intake for field vendor data, reviewing submissions for spatial integrity and attribute completeness before importing records.
  • High-Stakes Deliverables: Coordinate and package complex GIS deliverables for external stakeholders including Caltrans, CDT, and Hyperscalers.

Tactical Project Coordination

  • Central Liaison: Act as the point of contact for routine project status, ensuring engineering teams, inspectors, and contractors are aligned on milestones.
  • Operational Support: Facilitate internal and external project calls by documenting action items and distributing project summaries.
  • Technical Judgment: Make sound, timely decisions regarding data workflows and involve appropriate stakeholders to maintain high standards of quality.

Process Excellence & Compliance

  • SOP Architecture: Develop and maintain technical documentation, standard process guides, and reference materials for evolving GIS and CAD workflows.
  • Audit & Maintenance: Perform routine attribute edits and quality checks to proactively flag and resolve data inconsistencies.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all engineering and design activities adhere to company policies, contract requirements, and safety standards.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Project Management, or a related technical field required.
  • 1–3 years of experience in a GIS, engineering, or technical project support role required.
  • Minimum 2+ years of AutoCAD experience (Civil 3D focus) and functional proficiency in ArcGIS Pro data editing required.
  • Knowledge of outside plant (OSP) telecommunications engineering and construction processes preferred.
  • Strong technical writing skills and the ability to convey complex geospatial concepts to diverse audiences preferred.
  • Capable of working autonomously in a remote environment while maintaining a preferred, collaborative, customer-focused attitude.
  • Familiarity with office and field observer safety requirements.
  • Hands-on experience with ESRI geodatabases, spatial data editing, and mapping workflows. Familiarity with telecom-specific inventory tools, industry standards, and databases. Proficiency in AutoCAD app development and workflow automation.
  • Exposure to project management platforms such as Smartsheet, MS Project, or Asana.
