This position will involve skilled plan review work in securing and maintaining compliance with building codes and ordinances for residential and commercial projects.



  • Examine plans and specifications for new construction, additions, and alterations to residential and commercial buildings to determine compliance with the provisions of applicable construction codes.
  • Conduct inspections of buildings and properties during construction, alteration, and repair to ensure conformance with adopted building codes and amendments.
  • Perform work with independent judgment and action within the framework of existing rules and regulations.
  • Attend and participate in meetings; and training as needed to stay apprised of new industry trends and innovations, including construction code changes.

  • Ability to understand and interpret building codes, state statutes, and local ordinances as they relate to plans and specifications for residential, multi-family, and commercial structures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively when responding to citizens and/or contractor’s building code questions.
  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to work well with other inspectors and plan reviewers to accomplish department goals.

Education Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, construction management or related area of study or high school diploma supplemented by 5 years' experience of vocational and technical courses in the building trades with considerable experience in the building trades as a contractor, superintendent, foreman, inspector, or plan reviewer; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Working Knowledge of International Code Council (ICC) commercial and residential plan reviewer’s certification preferred.
  • Must obtain International Code Council (ICC) Certification(s) as Commercial and Residential Plans Examiner, Commercial and Residential Inspector within 12 months of date hired.
  • Certification or License: Applicants must have a valid driver’s license.

Physical Requirements
  • The required work will involve sitting for extended periods of time, standing or walking, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis, and high dexterity in operating office equipment, including a keyboard, phone, etc.
  • The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision and the ability to hear and speak to understand, respond to, and build relationships with a diverse clientele.
