What You’ll Do 

As a Surgical Technologist, you’ll assist in the care of patients undergoing surgical procedures by working closely with nursing staff and the surgical team. You’ll serve as a primary scrub, preparing and handling instruments, supplies, and equipment, anticipating the surgeon’s needs, and maintaining a sterile field throughout procedures. You may also function in a non-sterile role during surgery, ensuring needed instruments and supplies are promptly available to support safe, efficient patient care.

Surgical Technologist Job Responsibilities 

Apply principles of asepsis and strict sterile technique when scrubbing or circulating.

Identify and immediately correct breaks in sterile technique by any team member.

Perform proper skin preparation and maintain the sterile field throughout procedures.

Scrub in and set up instruments and supplies prior to patient arrival in the OR.

Ensure all required items are available and organized according to surgeon preference cards.

Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team during procedures.

Assist effectively in emergency situations, including performing CPR when required.

Monitor sterility of tables and supplies during emergent and high-stress cases.

Communicate clearly and take direction from the surgeon, anesthesia, charge nurse, and circulating nurse.

Prepare for complex or unusual cases by reviewing procedures and seeking expert guidance.

Open and prepare operating rooms, ensuring equipment, instruments, and furniture are ready.

Initiate room cleanup and efficient turnover between surgical cases.

Protect patient privacy, dignity, comfort, and safety through proper positioning and care.

You bring a strong foundation in surgical asepsis, attention to detail, and the ability to stay calm and decisive in fast-paced environments. You maintain required certification/licensure, demonstrate initiative in expanding your surgical knowledge, and serve as a reliable resource for peers and students. Above all, you are a collaborative team player committed to patient safety, quality outcomes, and adherence to departmental policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications 

Successful completion of a program with a school of surgical technology.

or

Training in the Armed Forces and subsequent certification and maintenance of same as a surgical technologist.
