Surgical Technologist Extern at St. Claire Regional Medical Center – Morehead, Kentucky

The Surgical Technologist Extern provides surgical care assistance in the application of sterile and aseptic technique under the supervision of the Certified Surgical Technologist and/or Registered Nurse. Combines knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation of tools and technologies to assist physician’s performance of invasive procedures.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Prepares for and performs appropriate age-specific surgical care to patient population served.
• Provides appropriate intraoperative surgical care based on the patient’s age and planned surgical procedure.
• Adheres to the principles of aseptic practice.
• Performs sponge, sharps, and instrument counts according to written policy.
• Cares for surgical specimens and cultures.
• Provides a safe environment for the surgical patient.
• Observes environmental infection control practices.
• Uses resources and equipment for patient care efficiently.
• Performs action that demonstrates accountability.

Education:
Enrolled in accredited Surgical Technologist program, actively pursuing diploma and/or certification required.

Experience:
None

Licensure/Certification:
Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
