Job Description
Purpose:
The RN Administrative Coordinator is responsible for monitoring and coordinating patient care and hospital operations during the assigned shift. This role assumes administrative responsibilities for the Nursing Department in the absence of the VP for Patient Care Services and may act temporarily for the President/CEO in accordance with established administrative policy. The RN Administrative Coordinator ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care, effective use of resources, and compliance with hospital policies, regulatory standards, and professional practice guidelines.
Major Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities:

Patient Care & Clinical Oversight

Coordinate the delivery of patient care in accordance with JMH standards, nursing practice guidelines, and policies.

Serve as a resource to nursing staff, providing guidance in patient care, critical thinking, and clinical decision-making.

Assist staff with interventions to assure safe and effective patient outcomes.

Coordinate admissions, discharges, and transfers, including observation versus admission decisions.

Demonstrate the skills and knowledge necessary to supervise or provide care appropriate across all patient age groups.

Leadership & Administrative Responsibilities

Interpret and enforce hospital and nursing department policies for staff across all units.

Act as administrative representative in the absence of the VP for Patient Care Services or President/CEO.

Participate in the development, promotion, and implementation of policies, programs, and standards.

Support directors and managers by providing input into staff performance evaluations, merit increases, promotions, and disciplinary actions.

Assist in maximizing utilization of employee skills and fostering professional growth among staff.

Resource & Staff Management
-
Utilize staffing ratios and patient classification/acuity systems to allocate personnel as needed.

Monitor productivity levels and budget parameters in coordination with Nursing Administration.

Allocate personnel to cover emergency situations and ensure adequate staffing coverage.

Provide immediate resolution for workplace issues and escalate as appropriate.

Encourage a positive work environment through effective communication and conflict resolution.

Quality, Safety & Compliance

Ensure compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC) standards and New York State Health Code regulations.

Monitor and enforce infection control, universal precautions, safety protocols, and disaster response policies.

Actively participate in quality improvement initiatives.

Prepare and submit the daily administrative report for the assigned shift.

Professional Development & Collaboration

Attend required Patient Care Services and Administrative Coordinator meetings.

Maintain professional competencies through mandatory training, continuing education, and participation in relevant programs.

Promote interdepartmental cooperation and effective communication between clinical and non-clinical staff.

Support the orientation of new employees and provide ongoing mentorship.

Perform other duties as assigned within scope of licensure and hospital policy.

Education:
-
Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

Current New York State RN licensure and registration required.
-
Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
-
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred.
Experience:
-
Three to five years of nursing experience required, with demonstrated administrative and supervisory competence.
Contacts:
-
Frequent contact with hospital staff, nursing personnel, physicians, and external officials.

Occasional contact with patients and visitors.
Physical Demands:
-
Stands and walks most of the shift.
Working Conditions:
-
Exposure to unpredictable patient or visitor behaviors and challenging situations.
-
Potential exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious diseases, cuts, burns, strains, and other injuries related to patient care or equipment.
-
May be scheduled to work alternate shifts or on-call. On-call staff must report within 30 minutes of receiving a call.
