Position Overview:
The Surgical Technologist & Supply Coordinator at OrthoArkansas plays a dual-function role vital to both surgical support and clinical supply management. This position assists surgeons during procedures by preparing the operating room, maintaining a sterile environment, and supporting patient safety through skilled surgical technologist duties. In addition, this role manages purchasing and inventory for surgical supplies and equipment, ensuring timely acquisition and maintenance of essential materials to support seamless surgical operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Surgical Support
Prepare and scrub for surgical procedures by checking assignments and gathering appropriate instruments and supplies.
Maintain a sterile field and comply with all infection control standards.
Assist surgeons during procedures, including draping, exposure, hemostasis, and wound closure.
Support patient care by verifying physician preferences and assisting in treatments and therapies.
Sterilization & Instrument Processing
Clean, wrap, and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment using approved techniques.
Monitor and document sterilization logs, autoclave tests, and equipment functionality.
Inspect instruments for wear, function, and cleanliness, recommending repairs or replacements when necessary.
Properly assemble and maintain instrument trays and procedure kits.
Procedure Room Support
Retrieve and process surgical instruments between cases to facilitate quick turnover.
Pull surgical cases daily based on surgeon preference sheets.
Maintain proper disposal of sharps and hazardous materials in compliance with OSHA and state guidelines.
Restock supplies and identify necessary reorders to minimize delays and waste.
Compliance & Documentation
Ensure compliance with CMS, JCAHO, and manufacturer IFUs (Instructions for Use) in all sterilization processes.
Maintain and reference the MSDS manual and Hazardous Communication Plan as required.
Purchasing & Inventory Coordination
Place accurate inventory requisitions independently and maintain purchasing files.
Cultivate vendor relationships to support timely and cost-effective procurement.
Monitor supply levels and manage stock rotation to minimize waste and ensure availability.
Equipment Oversight
Coordinate acquisition and maintenance of surgical and procedural equipment.
Maintain cleanliness, documentation, and records of all loaned or in-use equipment.
Training & Education
Train clinical staff on proper sterilization methods, autoclave operation, and infection control best practices.
Collaborate with the Spine Center Manager and Director on inventory, equipment needs, and protocol updates.
Additional Duties
Perform other related duties as assigned to enhance surgical team efficiency and clinical support.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
High school diploma or GED required.
Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing or surgical technology program.
0 to 6 months of related experience or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Certifications & Licenses:
Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
Preferred Certifications & Licenses:
Surgical Technologist Certification.
CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician).
Skills & Abilities:
Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain surgical sterility and safety.
Ability to multi-task efficiently in a fast-paced surgical environment.
Excellent communication, teamwork, and inventory management skills.
Software Skills:
Basic: 10-Key, Word Processing/Typing
