About This Position

Position Summary:This position performs manual and semi-skilled work in the locating of underground utilities to facilitate the maintenance, repair and rehabilitation of public streets, utilities, buildings, grounds, and facilities and other department assignments to assist with overall department operations. Essential Functions:
  • Reviews line locate requests and researches, locates and marks water, sewer and storm drains using electronic equipment.
  • Reviews utility location for dirt and grading permits and provides engineering personnel with information concerning possible conflicts with easement and utility location.
  • Assists engineering department in survey and inspection work to ensure compliance with city codes and requirements.
  • Assists in utility crews to inspect, maintain and repair service, main and wastewater lines; detect leaks.
  • Assists utility crews to maintain, and repair water main breaks and leaks, valves, fire hydrants, pressure reducing valves (PRVs) and pump systems.
  • Assists utility crews to clean and repair sanitary and storm sewers and catalogue the repairs; televises areas of infiltration, damage, buried manholes, and lines.
  • Clears trees and limbs from roadways, right-of-ways, and line of sight.
  • Assists Plumber in the maintenance and repair of the City’s plumbing fixtures, sprinkler systems, water fountains, and swimming pool equipment.
  • Assists utility crews to perform maintenance on storm sewer including ditching, culvert repair, replacements and catch basin rebuild and repair.
  • Assists with snow removal operations.
  • Inspects and maintains assigned equipment; maintains equipment in clean and operating manner.
  • Completes work orders, daily activity reports, inspection reports, and time sheets; maintains maintenance and service records/logs, and other pertinent information.
  • Reports to work for on-call after hours needs, as assigned.

  • Ability to prioritize duties to accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.
  • Knowledge of City policies, procedures and practices.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; take responsibility for quality and timeliness of work; respond to unplanned requests; complete assigned tasks and report progress; demonstrate behavior consistent with Department direction.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor when dealing with the public.
  • Ability to take control of situations in a responsible manner.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Ability to lead other team members.
  • Ability to work the allocated hours of the position and ability to work flexible hours to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays due to adverse weather conditions, construction projects, or other emergency service.
Required Education, Experience, Licensing, and Certifications:
  • High School Diploma/equivalent with four (4) years of Public Works-related labor experience.
  • Possession of a valid State of Tennessee commercial driver’s license with an “N” endorsement.
  • Completion of ATSSA Flagger Training and Traffic Control Technician, Trench Excavation and Safety Training, Confined Space Training, and TPWI Maintenance Technologies for Public Works class.
  • Associate's degree preferred.
