Job Description
The Fleet Mechanic is a mid-level maintenance position, and the primary role is to inspect, maintain, diagnose, and repair semi-trucks, trailers, chassis and other equipment leased or owned by TLD. Fleet Mechanics work under the Lead Technician and should require minimal support from others. Work is performed in our Shop but may be performed outside and travel may be required as deemed necessary.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Truck mechanics work in a variety of conditions, including:
- Temperature: Fleet Technicians may be exposed to extreme temperatures, both hot and cold.
- Noise: Fleet Technicians work in noisy environments and may be exposed to loud or distracting sounds.
- Lighting: Fleet Technicians may work in extremely bright or dim lighting.
- Location: Fleet Technicians may work both indoors and outdoors.
- Awkward positions: Fleet Technicians may need to get into awkward positions to reach cramped workspaces.
- Safety equipment: Fleet Technicians are required to wear PPE in compliance with TLDs PPE standards.
- Cleanliness: Fleet Technicians are required to organize their work area between repairs and maintain a clean and organized workstation.
- Collaboration: Fleet Technicians will collaborate with other mechanics in the shop and must be able to handle interpersonal conflicts.
- Greasy/oily parts: Fleet Technicians commonly work with greasy parts and tools.
- Overtime: Fleet Technicians are scheduled to work a minimum of 40 hours each week, and overtime and evening shifts are common and may be required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
· Wear appropriate PPE and follow safe work practices as specified in TLDs policies, best practices and SOPs.
· Perform PM inspections and services on semi-trucks and trailers.
· Perform diagnostics on many components of semi-trucks and trailers using tools to include but not limited to;
o Computer diagnostics software – Davie 4, DL8, PTT, Bendix, Wabco, etc.
o Multimeter
o Refrigerant recovery and recycling machine.
o Coolant pressure tester.
· Remove and replace faulty/damaged parts as needed using hand and portable power tools.
· Clean and organize work area between repairs and prior to end of shift.
· Safely and competently operate a class 8 semi-truck, with or without trailer, up to 80,000-pound GCWR, in tasks include but are not limited to:
o Driving trucks in and out of the shop area.
o Hooking and unhooking semi-trailers.
o Backing trucks and trailers in shop and in the yard.
o Test driving semi-trucks and trailers on public roads (with valid CDL)
o Drive semi-trucks and trailers to and from 3rd part vendor (with valid CDL)
o Recover semi-trucks and trailers as necessary (with valid CDL)
· Instruct/guide/assist subordinate technicians with work as requested
· Promote and maintain safe, productive and clean work culture.
· Communicate repairs with first line supervisor and drivers as necessary.
· Work with first line supervisor do identify priority work.
· Perform Quarterly/Semi-annual review of subordinate technicians.
· Driver orientation and inspection of new truck assignment.
Requirements:- 18 years of age or older
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Graduated from and accredited school studying Diesel Technology (Preferred)
- Advanced Mechanical Skills and Knowledge
- 2 years experience performing diagnostics & repair on class 8 trucks/trailers
- Good Organizational, verbal and written skills
- Ability to focus, multi-task, and detail oriented
