About Beacon Kalamazoo
Beacon Kalamazoo, formerly Borgess Hospital, is a full-service acute care hospital located in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The hospital has 268 staffed beds and provides 24/7 emergency care, including Level II Trauma Center services and Comprehensive Stroke Center care. Beacon Kalamazoo provides advanced surgical care for serious and life-threatening injuries and illnesses, along with specialty services including advanced heart care, cancer care, advanced orthopedics and neurosciences, women’s health, OB-GYN maternity care, and outpatient pediatric care.
What You’ll Do
A Fitness Coordinator reports to the Fitness Manager and assists the Manager in different aspects of coordinating the day-to-day operations of the fitness area, including fitness evaluations and exercise prescriptions, member orientations, fitness clinics, recreational and sports activities, and member incentive programs. You will be responsible for personal training operations including scheduling, implementing personal training programs and overall staff coordination in accordance with established Beacon Health & Fitness policies and procedures. You will ensure that there is sufficient staff coverage for the fitness areas, personal training, special programs, events and classes. This position is responsible for meeting financial obligations related to fitness programming and personal training.
Fitness Coordinator Job Responsibilities:
- Assist the fitness manager in recruiting, interviewing, and onboarding new staff
- Report maintenance issues involving facility and exercise equipment in timely manner to the appropriate contact (Fitness Manager, Direct Fitness or Maintenance Coordinator).
- Manages computer systems scheduling and club management systems according to staff shifts and availability (CSI & Microfit).
- Maintains a minimum of twenty hours of personal training and/or group fitness instruction.
- Maintains a minimum of five fitness desk hours per week
- Works in collaboration with other Beacon Health & Fitness Departments to carry out the mission and provide exceptional customer service.
- Works in collaboration with BMG entities (Physical Therapy, Physicians & Other Specialty Groups) through member referral.
- Enforces all Beacon Health & Fitness rules and regulations, including all emergency procedures outline in Operations Manual
- Receives comments and complaints from members; take appropriate action. Also, provides feedback to Beacon Health & Fitness leadership.
- Assists in the design, development, coordination and evaluation of a variety of motivational programs and special events for the Beacon Health & Fitness membership (Medical Fitness Week, Biggest Winner, Ignite, 5k Friday, etc.).
- Provides input in the development and maintenance of operational/fitness center/personal training pricing, policies and procedures.
- Provides weekly, monthly, and quarterly metric reports reflecting completion of new member orientation and current member follow-up.
- Provides weekly, monthly, and quarterly metric reports reflecting personal training session count downs and revenue.
- Constructs and leads monthly safety trainings in line with practices of the Medical Fitness Association.
- Monitor Beacon Health & Fitness policies and procedures to uphold the standards of the Medical Fitness Association.
- Active participation in leadership meetings, Wellness Surround care and continued education and leadership conferences.
- Maintains professional certifications as appropriate.
- Provides back-up for Fitness Desk/Personal Training during coverage shortages and call-offs.
- Maintains record of inventory for Fitness and Personal Training supplies and communicate in a timely manner
- Maintains records, reports, and files as required by Beacon Health & Fitness policies and procedures.
Supervisory Duties Responsibilities
- Has proficient knowledge of all fitness shifts (open and closing facility according to established procedures) in order to train staff.
- Monitors fitness staff performance by reviewing daily shift reports (Opening/Closing Reports and Daily Appointment Reports).
- Monitors staff involvement in staff trainings, in-services and program coordination.
- Prepares and coordinates fitness desk and personal training scheduling.
- Tracks and validates hours of fitness staff 'approved vs. worked.'
- Tracks and validates personal trainers' session countdowns.
- Coordinates in-house staff training on the latest fitness and wellness related research.
- Holds quarterly rounding's with fitness staff to give and receive feedback.
- Monitors payroll records and incentive pay for all personal trainers.
- Performs quarterly metric reviews of fitness staff performance (number of new member orientations completed & number of personal training sessions).
Customer Care Responsibilities
- Consults members regarding personal exercise goals and interests.
- Recommends appropriate Beacon Health & Fitness programs and services based on member goals and interests.
- Matches members with Beacon Health & Fitness
- Trainer in a timely manner based on member request.
- Administers fitness tests, such as sub-maximal aerobic capacity test, body composition, flexibility/range of motion and strength test for fitness evaluation purposes.
- Prepares individualized exercise prescriptions and instruct members in proper techniques based on fitness evaluation.
- Conducts and coordinates educational sessions for Beacon Health & Fitness members on the latest fitness and wellness related research (exercise techniques, injury prevention, etc).
Organizational Responsibilities
- Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
- Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
- Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
- Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
- Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
- Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
- Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
- Complies with established organization and department policies.
- Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.
What You Bring
The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science or a health related field with coursework in Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology and Anatomy. Certification through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and certification through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America as a Group Exercise Instructor within 30 days of hire is required.
Required Qualifications
- Completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science or a health related field with coursework in Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology and Anatomy.
- Must obtain certification through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and certification through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America as a Group Exercise Instructor within 30 days of hire.
- Two years of professional experience in the fitness and wellness industry and two years of experience in personal training is required.
- Supervisory experience is preferred.
Licenses and Certifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Possesses a wide range of knowledge of the fitness and wellness industry, exercise testing and prescription and personal training, sport, and recreation programs.
- Demonstrates an understanding of basic principles of motivation, exercise science and safety, behavior modification and emergency procedures.
- Demonstrates the technical knowledge of basic kinesiology, exercise programming and exercise physiology to include their application in order to instruct members about proper exercise techniques.
- Instructs in group exercise classes and one-on-one personal training.

- Requires the technical expertise necessary to perform health risk appraisals, low-level strength and conditioning testing and evaluations.
