Job Description

Position Overview:

We are seeking a detail-oriented Accounting Specialist to support day-to-day accounting operations in a federal government contracting environment. This part-time role offers the opportunity to work across multiple accounting functions, including payroll, billing, and project accounting, while supporting a growing finance team.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on accounting work, thrives in a deadline-driven environment, and is comfortable managing multiple priorities with accuracy and professionalism.

This role may transition to full-time based on business needs. 

Key Responsibilities:

Core Accounting Operations:

  • Perform daily accounting activities, including transaction processing, reconciliations, and financial record maintenance
  • Support month-end close activities, including journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations

Accounts Payable & Receivable

  • Process vendor invoices, ensuring accurate coding, approvals, and documentation
  • Monitor customer payments, apply cash receipts, and follow up on outstanding balances
  • Payroll & Timekeeping Support
  • Review timesheets for accuracy and completeness, ensuring proper labor charging and approvals
  • Assist with semi-monthly payroll processing, including employee updates, deductions, and validations
  • Support benefit deductions and payroll-related reconciliation

Billing & Project Accounting

  • Prepare and submit client invoices in accordance with contract requirements
  • Support project setup and maintenance, including labor categories, billing structures, and funding tracking 

Systems & Data Management:

  • Maintain accurate records in Unanet Financials and ADP Workforce Now
  • Support employee and project data updates across systems

Compliance & Process Improvement:

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and federal contracting requirements (FAR, SCA)
  • Maintain audit-ready documentation
  • Identify process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy

Collaboration:

  • Partner with finance leadership, project managers, and external stakeholders to support business operations

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or equivalent experience
  • 3–5+ years of accounting experience in a federal government contracting environment
  • Unanet Financials (project accounting, billing, AP/AR)
  • ADP Workforce Now (payroll processing)
  • Experience supporting payroll and accounting reconciliations

Strong understanding of:

  • GAAP
  • Project-based accounting concepts
  • Federal contracting fundamentals

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Service Contract Act (SCA) compliance
  • Exposure to DCAA audits or audit-ready accounting practices
  • Experience in a professional services or government contracting organization

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Proficiency in Excel and Microsoft 365 tools
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a part-time capacity
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills 
  • Ability to work independently while staying aligned with team priorities
