Position Summary
The Substitute Teacher / Instructional Support provides instructional and classroom management coverage in the absence of the regular teacher or while assisting with short- or long-term instructional needs. This position maintains a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment, ensuring continuity of instruction and adherence to school policies and procedures in alignment with the mission of River City Science Academy.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Follow lesson plans, instructional materials, and directions provided by the regular teacher or administration.
- Maintain effective classroom management that promotes safety, learning, and respect for all students.
- Supervise students during instructional and non-instructional times (hallways, lunch, recess, arrival, dismissal, and assemblies).
- Develop and maintain a positive classroom climate characterized by fairness, mutual respect, and support.
- Employ appropriate instructional technology and learning tools.
- Implement schoolwide rules, expectations, and behavior-management strategies consistently.
- Adapt instruction and activities to meet student needs when lesson plans are unavailable.
- Maintain accurate attendance and required classroom documentation.
- Communicate promptly and professionally with administrators, staff, and students.
- Review and follow school emergency procedures and safety protocols.
- Report any incidents, safety concerns, or behavioral issues to administration immediately.
- Exhibit professionalism, punctuality, and ethical conduct at all times.
- Participate in required trainings and maintain compliance with school and state requirements.
- For long-term assignments: plan and deliver lessons, grade student work, and maintain academic records as directed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or designee, including hallway, cafeteria, arrival/dismissal, and activity monitoring.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent required (Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred).
- Completion of Level 2 background screening per Florida law.
- Ability to follow instructional plans and manage classrooms effectively under supervision.
- Effective communication skills with students, staff, and parents/guardians.
- Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field.
- Valid or eligible Florida Educator Certificate.
- Prior teaching or substitute teaching experience in K-12 settings.
- Experience working with diverse student populations, including ESE and ESOL.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of classroom management, instructional strategies, and supervision practices.
- Ability to adapt quickly to different grade levels, subjects, and environments.
- Skills in organization, time management, and maintaining confidentiality.
- Commitment to professionalism, reliability, and student success.
Working Conditions / Physical Requirements
- Work primarily performed indoors in classroom settings, with some outdoor supervision.
- Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds and extended periods of standing or walking.
- Must be able to perform essential duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
Terms of Employment
Position may be daily, short-term, or long-term, depending on school needs. Compensation and schedule are established by the school. Performance will be evaluated in accordance with School Board and RCSA policy for substitute and instructional support personnel.
