Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)
Status: Part-time 24-30 hours per week Exempt
The RAMS Adult/Older Adult Outpatient Clinic is located in the Inner Richmond district of San Francisco. Practice at the Clinic reflects and supports the diverse cultures, languages, and ethnicities of its clients, including immigrant and refugee families who are monolingual in an Asian & Pacific Islander or Russian language, and those who have limited English speaking ability. The Clinic provides quality, culturally competent/sensitive, consumer-centered assessment, counseling & psychotherapy, case management, psychiatric evaluation, and medication management services to adults and older adults.
Within the context of a community mental health outpatient clinic, the Nurse Practitioner assumes medical responsibility for the psychiatric care and prescribing of medications for diverse, underserved populations.
The primary assignment is 24 hours per week working with Adult/Older Adult client populations as described below. Applicants who are interested in only the Adult/Older Adult program hours are encouraged to apply. RAMS also welcomes applicants who are also interested and qualified to provide services to Child and Adolescent client populations at the RAMS Child, Youth, & Family Services program (co-located at 601 Clement St) for approximately 5-6 additional hours per week - the Child/Adolescent component is optional, and not required.
Essential Job Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Conduct psychiatric evaluations, medication evaluations, and manage psychiatric care of assigned patients (e.g., provide follow up psychopharmacological treatment/management).
- Coordinate with patient and multidisciplinary care providers regarding treatment planning, progress, and disposition.
- Order/obtain and monitor laboratory tests.
- Liaise/work collaboratively with other medical/clinical providers (both at RAMS and in the community) to coordinate patient care and review disposition.
- Maintain confidential medical/treatment and billing records/documentation for all services provided as well as medications, in accordance to requirements specified by agency’s policies, clinical standards, & funding sources (including Medi-Cal, Medicare, SFDPH, etc.).
- Provide consultation and crisis management support to the Officer of the Day, as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
- NP degree from an accredited medical or nursing school
- Completion of a Nurse Practitioner psychiatry-specific training program
- Valid California Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner License & DEA Certificate
- Demonstrated clinical experience in working with individuals with serious and/or persistent mental health conditions, including those with co-occurring disorders
- Demonstrated experience & knowledge/ability to independently assess, diagnose, generate comprehensive treatment plan, and carry out medication treatment and therapeutic interventions to the seriously mentally ill population
Other Preferred Qualifications
- Experience providing medication management services to patients in community mental health settings.
- Familiarity with SF community behavioral health systems of care, the philosophy of care, levels of care for clinical services, and the delivery of such services.
- Knowledge of SF community resources for health, mental health, substance abuse, vocational, housing, and other services.
- Commitment to the philosophy, goals, & mission of RAMS in providing community-based, culturally competent, and consumer-guided mental health services to underserved populations.
- Commitment to engaging in professional development trainings, continuing education seminars, case conferences, and current literature reviews of treatment strategies for the populations served.
- Strong communication skills, ability to interface professionally with a diverse, multi-cultural, and interdisciplinary staff at all levels.
- Ability to provide culturally and linguistically competent services in a threshold language of populations served by the clinic, i.e. Cantonese, Mandarin, Russian, or Vietnamese, highly preferred.
Optional Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Component (approximately 5–6 hours/week)
For candidates with relevant child/adolescent training and experience, RAMS would add approximately 5-6 hours per week with the Child, Youth, & Family Services program, co-located at the 601 Clement St worksite. Adult-only candidates do not need to meet the child/adolescent-specific qualifications below.
Child & Adolescent Responsibilities may include:- Provide culturally competent psychiatric services to children and youth, assume medical responsibility for assigned cases, and prescribe medications as clinically appropriate
- Conduct psychiatric evaluations of children and youth
- Coordinate with children/youth, families, multidisciplinary care providers, schools, and other community providers regarding psychiatric services, treatment planning, progress, and disposition of cases.
- Serve as a clinical resource to clinicians, counselors, interns/trainees, and other members of the treatment team, including case consultation as needed.
- Develop and maintain administrative and treatment documentation and records related to child/adolescent care in accordance with agency policies, clinical standards, and applicable funding-source requirements.
- Provide education and consultation regarding behavioral health services and issues to clients, families, staff, schools, community members, and other professionals as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Relevant training and demonstrated experience providing psychiatric services to children, youth, and families, at least two years of child/adolescent psychiatric experience preferred.
- Experience collaborating with families, schools, community providers, and multidisciplinary clinical teams
- Community mental health experience preferred, including experience effectively engaging children, youth, and families with complex, difficult, or resistant presentations
- Flexibility in adjusting service delivery to meet client and family needs, and demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team
- Familiarity with San Francisco community behavioral systems of care preferred.
- Fingerprint clearance and TB clearance as required for the child/youth setting and applicable program requirements
Reports to: Director of Adult/Older Adult Outpatient Clinic & Supervising Psychiatrist, and Director of Child Youth and Families Outpatient Clinic if CYF hours are relevant
