Function of Position:

Reporting to the Director of TRIO Student Support Services, the Academic Coach is a part-time, temporary, grant-funded professional staff member who supports TRIO SSS participants with academic success, college-level writing, reading comprehension, study strategies, numeracy and math-success strategies, and self-regulated learning. The Academic Coach provides individual and small-group support on a walk-in and scheduled basis, with emphasis on the writing process, reading strategies, time management, exam preparation, academic planning, and college transition. The Academic Coach supports students as independent, intentional learners through active listening, guiding questions, and strategy-based instruction. This position does not primarily provide support with editing, proofreading, computation, or course-content instruction. Instead, the Academic Coach helps students identify strengths and areas for growth, develop assignment completion strategies, improve reading and writing practices, and connect with tutoring and academic assistance (TAAC) programs, and campus resources.

*This is a temporary, grant funded position

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

Primary Functions:

  • Provide one-on-one and small-group academic coaching to TRIO SSS participants on a walk-in and scheduled basis.

  • Deliver the academic coaching model and program as designed by the Tutoring and Academic Assistance Center (TAAC), working closely with the Director of Learning Support Systems to provide TRIO students with College-wide services.

  • Assist students with college-level writing by supporting brainstorming, outlining, thesis development, organization, paragraph structure, research integration, analysis, citations, revision, and editing strategies.

  • Help students recognize patterns in grammar, mechanics, sentence structure, and organization while avoiding direct proofreading or editing.

  • Support students in developing academic voice, writing style, and confidence as college-level writers.

  • Assist students in refining mathematical and quantitative skill sets, identifying potential areas for growth, and providing tools and resources to assist with achievement in mathematics coursework.

  • Help students strengthen reading comprehension strategies, including understanding academic texts, identifying key ideas, annotating, summarizing, and integrating reading into coursework.

  • Introduce strategies related to study skills, time management, organization, note-taking, exam preparation, assignment completion, academic planning, and college transition.

  • Use active listening, guiding questions, and productive questioning techniques to help students think critically, solve problems, and take ownership of academic success.

  • Refer students to tutoring and academic assistance (TAAC) services, academic advising, counseling, career services, and other campus supports.

  • Monitor student engagement with tutoring and academic assistance (TAAC) resources in collaboration with TRIO SSS staff.

  • Develop and conduct workshops related to writing, reading comprehension, study skills, math-success strategies, time management, academic planning, and student success.

  • Collaborate with TRIO SSS staff, faculty, TAAC staff, and campus partners to support student learning, persistence, and completion.

  • Maintain records of student contacts, referrals, workshops, and services in accordance with TRIO SSS expectations.

Secondary Functions:

  • Visit classrooms, labs, workshops, or TRIO SSS program spaces as needed to introduce Academic Coaching services.

  • Assist with TRIO SSS academic support activities, recruitment, student success initiatives, workshops, and other projects as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, English, Reading, Literacy, Counseling, Psychology, Rhetoric and Composition, or a related field.

  • Experience working with diverse learners in an educational, tutoring, coaching, writing support, or similar setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to support college-level writing, reading, learning strategies, and academic skill development.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and technology skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a related field, or in progress.

  • Experience providing writing support, academic coaching, tutoring, or learning assistance in higher education.

  • Experience supporting first-generation, low-income, and/or students with disabilities.

  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently

Hours: Up to 20 Hours per Week

Salary: $20/hour
