Apogee Research is seeking an experienced, highly motivated, and organized Assistant Facility Security Officer (AFSO) to support the administration of Personnel Security, Special Access Program (SAP), and Collateral Security operations. The successful candidate will serve as a key member of the Security team, responsible for managing personnel security processes, maintaining compliance with government security requirements, supporting classified programs, and providing guidance to employees and program personnel on a wide range of security matters.
The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of personnel security regulations, clearance processing, security reporting requirements, and classified program support within a Department of Defense environment. This position requires exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational skills, sound judgment, and the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced and dynamic setting.
The successful candidate must have a working knowledge of 32 CFR Part 117 (NISPOM), personnel security requirements, and other applicable government security regulations and procedures. The candidate will work closely with the Facility Security Officer (FSO) and report to the Director of Security while supporting business operations and classified program requirements.
The Assistant Facility Security Officer (AFSO) will be responsible for administering collateral personnel security activities, processing and tracking security clearances, maintaining personnel security records, managing security reporting requirements, and ensuring compliance with government and company security policies. Additional responsibilities include supporting facility inspections and self-assessments, processing incoming and outgoing visit requests, conducting security briefings and debriefings, coordinating classified shipments, administering intrusion detection system (IDS) and access control processes, and performing other security-related duties as assigned.

This job requires final TOP SECRET security clearance. We will only accept candidates that currently have a final TOP SECRET security clearance. All applicants must be a US CITIZEN. This position is full-time, in-person and located in our Arlington, Virginia office.
Responsibilities
- Process personnel security clearances and maintain accurate records for clearance actions, investigations, and adjudications.
- Administer personnel security systems including DISS, e-QIP, NISS, NBIS, and other government security databases as required.
- Initiate, submit, and track security clearance investigations, reinvestigations, upgrades, and reciprocity requests.
- Maintain personnel security files and ensure compliance with applicable government and company security requirements.
- Working knowledge of personnel security reporting requirements, continuous vetting principles, and reportable events under NISPOM, DCSA, and DoD security regulations.
- Assist with security indoctrinations, debriefings, annual refresher training, and foreign travel/security awareness briefings.
- Support the administration of classified visit requests and verify personnel access eligibility.
- Assist with self-inspections, audits, and government security reviews by preparing personnel security documentation and records.
- Review and process reports of security incidents, adverse information, foreign contacts, and reportable activities.
- Maintain accurate access rosters and support SCI, SAP, and collateral access management activities.
- Coordinate with government security representatives, program managers, and employees regarding personnel security matters.
- Ensure timely submission and tracking of required security documentation and notifications.
- Assist the Facility Security Officer with implementing and maintaining security policies, procedures, and compliance requirements.
- Support onboarding and offboarding activities related to security clearances and classified access.
- Prepare reports, metrics, and status updates related to personnel security programs.
- Provide customer service and guidance to employees regarding clearance processes and security requirements.
Experience Required
- Must have an active Top Secret security clearance; ability to obtain and maintain TS/SCI eligibility.
- Bachelor's degree and 2–5 years of experience in personnel security, industrial security, or a related security discipline (additional experience in considered in lieu of degree).
- Experience processing personnel security clearances and working within the DoD security environment.
- Working knowledge of DISS, e-QIP, NBIS, NISS, or comparable government personnel security systems.
- Completion of DCSA/CDSE personnel security training courses.
- Experience supporting government contracts and classified programs.
- Knowledge of continuous vetting, insider threat, and reporting requirements.
- Experience in preparing personnel security metrics and compliance reports
- Familiarity with NISPOM requirements and personnel security regulations.
- Experience maintaining security records, files, and access databases.
- Understanding of SCI, SAP, collateral security programs, and classified access procedures.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to handle sensitive and classified information with discretion and professionalism.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with employees, management, and government customers.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and security tracking systems.
