Statement of Learning Outcomes for FWS Student Employees
Students will develop practical workplace skills, including customer service, retail operations, inventory management, and teamwork. Through this position, students will gain experience in time management, professional communication, and attention to detail?skills applicable across a wide range of career pathways.
Function of Position:
The student employee will assist the MCC Bookstore staff in the daily operations of the store, providing excellent customer service while supporting retail, inventory, and fulfillment functions.
This position is funded exclusively through Federal Work Study (FWS). Applicants must be approved by the Financial Aid Office for FWS eligibility prior to being considered for employment. If you are unsure of your FWS eligibility, please contact Financial Aid before applying. Applicants must include their M# in any correspondence with the Financial Aid Office.
Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:
- Greet and assist customers as they enter, browse, and exit the store
- Assist with merchandising products, creating displays, and monitoring inventory by stocking shelves and coolers
- Assist with receiving, pricing, and stocking incoming merchandise
- Assist students on the sales floor
- Pull and process web orders
- Provide additional assistance during special events and peak periods, including the first week of classes
- Remain knowledgeable about current sales and applicable discounts, and assist customers accordingly
- Perform general cleaning responsibilities and other duties as assigned
- Work as a team to provide an excellent customer experience

Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
- Must be enrolled in classes at MCC and meet Federal Work-Study eligibility requirements as determined by the Financial Aid Office
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a customer-facing environment
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to maintain reliable and punctual attendance within a flexible schedule of 5-15 hours per week
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently
- Basic understanding of a retail environment
- Highly self-motivated, disciplined, enthusiastic, detail-oriented, and able to multitask
- Basic math, keyboarding, and data entry skills
- Prior customer service or work experience in a retail or campus setting
Additional Information:
Pay Rate: $16.00/hour
Hours per Week: Up to 20 hours/week
