Position Overview:

The Orthopedic Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) is responsible for providing high-quality, patient-centered orthopedic care in collaboration with the supervising orthopedic surgeon. The APP evaluates, diagnoses, treats, and manages patients with musculoskeletal injuries and conditions in both clinic and hospital settings. The APP serves as an integral member of the orthopedic care team, supporting patient access, surgical coordination, post-operative care, patient education, and continuity of care throughout the treatment process. The APP practices within the scope of licensure, organizational policies, and evidence-based orthopedic standards while promoting exceptional patient outcomes and patient satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Care

• Conduct comprehensive orthopedic evaluations, including obtaining medical histories, performing physical examinations, and developing treatment plans.

• Diagnose and manage acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions under established protocols and collaborative practice agreements.

• Order and communicate diagnostic studies, including laboratory tests, X-rays, CT scans, MRI studies, and other orthopedic imaging.

• Develop and implement treatment plans, including medications, injections, splinting, bracing, casting, and rehabilitation recommendations.

• Perform office-based orthopedic procedures within scope of practice and competency.

• Evaluate and manage post-operative patients, ensuring appropriate recovery and follow-up care.

• Assist in coordinating surgical care, including pre-operative evaluations, patient education, and post-operative management.

• Collaborate closely with physical therapy, occupational therapy, primary care providers, and other specialists to coordinate patient care.

• Identify patients requiring escalation of care and collaborate with the orthopedic surgeon regarding complex clinical decisions.

Surgical Support

• Participate in surgical first-assist responsibilities as permitted by training, credentialing, and organizational policies.

• Round on hospitalized orthopedic patients as assigned.

• Assist with discharge planning and coordination of post-discharge care needs.

• Support surgical scheduling and optimization of patient readiness for procedures.

Patient Experience & Education

• Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment options, surgical procedures, recovery expectations, and preventive care.

• Promote shared decision-making and patient engagement in treatment planning.

• Address patient concerns and questions promptly and professionally.

• Contribute to patient satisfaction initiatives and service excellence standards.

Documentation & Compliance

• Complete all documentation, orders, and clinical communications accurately and within established timeframes.

• Maintain compliance with Granville Health System policies, state and federal regulations, and professional practice standards.

• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and departmental performance improvement activities.

• Maintain required licensure, certifications, and continuing education requirements.

Team Collaboration

• Foster positive working relationships with physicians, nursing staff, rehabilitation services, radiology, and support personnel.

• Participate in departmental meetings, provider meetings, and clinical education opportunities.

• Support workflow efficiency and access initiatives to improve orthopedic patient care.
Critical Competencies:

Orthopedic Clinical Expertise

• Demonstrated knowledge of orthopedic conditions, injuries, fractures, sports medicine conditions, joint disorders, and post-surgical management.

• Ability to independently evaluate and manage routine orthopedic conditions within scope of practice.

Diagnostic & Clinical Decision-Making

• Ability to formulate differential diagnoses and treatment plans utilizing evidence-based orthopedic practices.

• Competency in interpreting orthopedic imaging and diagnostic studies.

Procedural Skills

Competency in orthopedic office procedures including:

• Joint injections

• Trigger point injections

• Splinting and bracing

• Cast application and removal

• Wound assessment and management

• Suture and staple removal

Qualifications

Nurse Practitioner (NP)

Nurse Practitioner (NP)

Nurse Practitioner Master's degree from an accredited educational institution.

Current state advanced practice registered nurse license.

Current DEA licensure or ability to obtain.

Physician Assistant (PA)

Graduate of a physician assistant educational program that is accredited by a National Commission on Accreditation of Allied Education Programs.

Licensed by the State of North Carolina as a Physician Assistant.

Current DEA licensure or ability to obtain.

Preferred:

• Minimum of two (2) years of orthopedic, sports medicine, emergency medicine, urgent care, or surgical APP experience.

• Previous orthopedic surgery first-assist experience.

• Experience managing orthopedic conditions in an outpatient clinic setting.

• Experience interpreting orthopedic imaging and managing post-operative patients.

• ACLS certification preferred.
