Instructor, EMS (CE)-NHC Endowment Grant TFT at Cape Fear Community College – Wilmington, North Carolina

DEFINITION:

The role of the Emergency Medical Science Instructor is to provide knowledge in his/her field of expertise and to promote various student-centered learning activities that will stimulate an interest in critical thinking and a desire for life-long learning. Various teaching strategies, learning styles and delivery methods including new technology systems will be utilized to reach this goal. The Instructor is responsible for assisting in planning, programming, instruction and evaluation of the continuing education program offerings. This position will focus on providing opportunities for New Hanover County students in Emergency Medical Science.

***This is a Time Limited, Temporary Full Time Grant Funded Position. Position begins July 2024 and ends December 2026 with potential to be extended***

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

• Receives general supervision from the Public Service Department Chair.
• Receives technical direction from the Emergency Medical Science Program Director

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

• Collaborate with the Emergency Medical Science Instructors to select textbook and learning resources for the students and faculty
• Develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; grade and record individual scores
• Provide classroom demonstrations and develop laboratory assignments to provide hands on experience as appropriate
• Maintain accurate records of student attendance and performance
• Assist with class and program schedules
• Maintain and submit all required records in a neat, accurate and timely fashion, including but not limited to class rosters, registration forms, pay sheets, attendance forms and grade rosters
• Maintain an accurate inventory of instructional supplies for all the program’s classes
• Serve as an academic advisor for Emergency Medical Science Program
• Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area and in accordance with CFCC policies and guidelines
• Makes recommendations for program/curriculum changes
• Program Outcome Assessment
• Plan, direct, and participate in the instruction for the Emergency Medical Science program; develop supplemental materials and tests; maintain accurate records of student attendance and performance.
• Participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for the Emergency Medical Science program including curriculum development and instructional coordination.
• Continuously monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures; assess and monitor workload, administrative and support systems, and internal reporting relationships; identify opportunities for improvement and review with the Public Service Department Chair.
• Develop and draft materials necessary for instruction with the direction and approval of the program director.
• Assist the Emergency Medical Science Program Director to ensure compliance with accreditation standards for Emergency Medical Science Educational Programs as set by the Committee on Accreditation of Education Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP) and the North Carolina Office of EMS (NCOEMS).

Other Important Functions:

• Assist in outreach and recruitment events at local high schools
• Oversee and participate in field studies and assignments; travel with students to provide assistance and instruction as appropriate
• Act as an advisor and counselor to students; provide individual tutoring to students
• outside of the classroom as needed; participate in student recruitment efforts
• Assist the Emergency Medical Science Program Director to ensure compliance with accreditation standards for EMS Educational Programs as set by the Committee on Accreditation of Education Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP) and North Carolina Office of EMS (NCOEMS).
• Assess material, supply, and equipment needs for the Emergency Medical Science program; submit requests for the ordering of supplies to the Emergency Medical Science Program Director. Help maintain an inventory of equipment and supplies.
• Participate in the academic program efforts to recruit and retain students; coordinate the development, review, and revision of program publications, publicity and other community relations’ activities.
• Coordinate activities with student services in the implementation of CFCC Emergency Medical Science program admission, progression, and graduation policies.
• Ensure the adherence to safe and appropriate work practices and procedures.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

• Organizational and management practices as applied to the planning, analysis and evaluation of programs, policies and operational needs.
• Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations, including CoAEMSP and NCOEMS.
• Principles and procedures of academic and instructional program development and administration in the area of assignment.
• Principles and practices of curriculum development and instructional strategies.
• Current trends, research and development in the area of assignment.

Ability To:

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Minimum Education/Training:

• Associates Degree from a regionally accredited institution in a related field of study required.

Minimum Experience:

• At least 2 FT years of experience (or any combination of PT experience that equals two FT years) in an instructional setting as an instructor, and with course development.
• 8 years of specific industry work as an EMT and/or Paramedic.
• Credentialing as a NC Level I Paramedic Instructor required.

Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:

• Bachelors or Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in a closely related field.
• At least 5 years of experience in an instructional setting as an instructor, and with course development
• At least 10 years of specific industry experience as an EMT and/or Paramedic.
• Instructor certifications in BCLS, ACLS, PHTLS, and PALS are preferred.
