Overview:

The Senior Accountant at the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) plays a critical role in the institution’s financial operations. This position ensures the integrity of accounting information by recording, verifying, consolidating, and entering transactions in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). The Senior Accountant is responsible for month-end close activities, general ledger oversight, reconciliations, financial reporting, audit support, and regulatory compliance. This individual will collaborate across departments to support accurate financial planning and grant reporting and serve as a key resource for financial inquiries and decision-making.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts and sub-ledgers.
  • Ensure timely and accurate month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and internal management reports.
  • Monitor and analyze financial data to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Forecast and monitor cash flow on a weekly and monthly basis.
  • Track actual performance against the budget and flag significant variances.
  • Maintain and report on reserves and designated fund balances.
  • Oversee accounts payable and receivable transactions to ensure accurate coding and timely processing.
  • Support grant reimbursement submissions and tracking in coordination with development and grants staff.
  • Serve as a key point of contact during annual audits and provide required documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and institutional policies.
  • Maintain organized electronic records for all financial transactions and audit trail purposes.
  • Collaborate with the CFO and Finance team on budget development and forecasting.
  • Prepare reports for senior leadership and Board of Trustees as needed.
  • Communicate financial information clearly to non-finance stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting, preferably in a nonprofit, higher education, or grant-funded environment.
  • Proficiency with accounting systems. Preferably Great Plains.
  • Advanced Excel skills.
  • Strong understanding of fund accounting and grant compliance.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
