Job Description

Job Summary:
The Debt Defense Attorney will represent consumers in debt collection matters, providing legal defense throughout all stages of litigation. This role involves simultaneously defending multiple consumer debt cases, negotiating and settling matters with opposing counsel, attending court hearings, and maintaining consistent communication with clients. The attorney is responsible for managing client expectations, explaining legal options and outcomes, and ensuring clients are informed and supported throughout the case process.

Essential Functions – Debt Defense Associate Attorney

• Draft legal pleadings, including responses to motions and other court filings.
• Review, analyze, and respond to incoming legal documents and court notices.
• Review and analyze client-provided documents relevant to pending matters.
• Negotiate with opposing counsel to settle cases in accordance with established resolution pathways and the expectations discussed with clients during their initial consultation.
• Negotiate with opposing counsel to resolve pending motions.
• Attend and represent clients at court hearings via telephone, Zoom, or in person.
• Manage multiple cases simultaneously, ensuring compliance with all deadlines and court requirements.
• Coordinate and supervise paralegals and legal assistants regarding case preparation and client communication.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date case files, documentation, and correspondence using Clio case management software.
• Perform legal office administrative responsibilities, including email correspondence and case file management.
• Assist with overall case management and strategy development.
• Communicate effectively with clients, judges, court staff, and opposing counsel. Provide timely case updates to clients throughout the progression of each matter.
• Assist with client management by maintaining clear and consistent communication, addressing client concerns, and managing client expectations to ensure a positive client experience.
• Attend weekly department meetings.
• Escalate complete, high-risk, or unusual matters to the Team Lead and/or Managing Attorney as appropriate.

Required Skills/Abilities:
• Knowledge of Florida Civil Rules and Procedure.
• Clio experience preferred, but not required.
• Following up with Clients, Opposing Council, and Courts.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
• Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
• Extensive knowledge of office administration, clerical procedures, and recordkeeping systems.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Extremely proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software with the ability to learn new or updated software.
Education and Experience:
• Juris Doctorate as well as a license to practice law in the state of Florida.
• 3 years minimum experience practicing law.
Physical Requirements:
• Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
