The Systems & Security Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and security of the organization's IT infrastructure. This role ensures the reliability, performance, and protection of systems, networks, and data across on-premises and cloud environments. The engineer works cross-functionally to support business operations while maintaining strong security and compliance standards. This position will primarily be performed remotely, but will require occasional (and sometimes short notice) on-site presence, requiring the candidate live within commuting distance to the NXC office in Minneapolis.
Responsibilities:
Systems Engineering
- Design, implement, and maintain server infrastructure in Windows and/or Linux.
- Administer core infrastructure services including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, and Office 365.
- Manage virtualization and hosting platforms (VMware, Scale Computing).
- Apply system updates, patches, and configuration standards.
- Monitor system performance, availability, and capacity.
- Work with managed service providers (MSP) to support backup, recovery, and disaster recovery solutions.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex system-level issues.
Security Engineering
- Implement and maintain security controls to protect systems, networks, and data.
- Monitor security tools and logs to detect threats and anomalies.
- Respond to and support investigation of security incidents.
- Conduct vulnerability assessments and coordinate remediation efforts.
- Enforce identity and access management principles, including least privilege and multi-factor authentication MFA.
- Apply system and network hardening standards.
- Support audits and compliance requirements as applicable.
Automation, Documentation, and Collaboration
- Automate routine systems and network tasks using scripting or automation tools.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, runbooks, and standard operating procedures.
- Collaborate with IT support teams, application teams, and vendors.
- Provide technical guidance and serve as an escalation point when needed.
Qualifications:
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of experience in systems and security engineering.
- Strong working knowledge of:
- Windows and/or Linux administration.
- Microsoft 365 and Microsoft security and identity platforms (Intune, Purview, Defender, Entry ID)
- Security best practices and common threat vectors.
- Experience supporting virtualization and cloud platforms.
- Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills.
- Ability to participate in after-hours maintenance and on-call support, as needed.
Preferred
- Experience with cloud services (Azure and Microsoft 365).
- Scripting or automation experience (PowerShell).
- Security, networking, or cloud certifications (e.g. CISSP, Security+, Azure).
- Experience supporting compliance or audit initiatives.
- Experience working in hybrid or enterprise-scale environments.

The pay range for this role is:
100,000 - 130,000 USD per year(Hybrid-Remote (Minneapolis))
