Designed for an early career individual, the Transmission Line Engineer role offers the opportunity to develop specialized expertise in transmission line design, project coordination, and early mentorship responsibilities. This position combines hands-on design work with growing accountability for quality, efficiency, and mentorship under moderate supervision. This position allows for on-site or a hybrid work schedule in any of our office locations: St. Louis, MO; Collinsville, IL; or Bettendorf, IA.
You will:
- Independently develop transmission line designs using PLS-CADD and related tools; produce drawings, stringing charts, bills of material, and technical documentation.
- Perform detailed engineering analysis and calculations to ensure compliance with NESC, RUS, and client standards.
- Evaluate line routing and spotting considerations, including ROW requirements, structure types, and span lengths.
- Coordinate with survey and real estate teams to incorporate field data and easement information into design.
- Identify and support permitting requirements (DOT, railroad, FAA) and assist with exhibits and applications.
- Conduct foundation analysis (direct embed and drilled pier) and prepare construction schedules/drawings.
- Prepare and review assembly configurations, fit checks, and material specifications for complete IFC packages.
- Support client meetings, cross-discipline coordination, and field visits for design validation and construction support.
- Contribute to process improvements, standards development, and technical initiatives within the design team.
- Provide mentorship to junior engineers and drafters.
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or related ABET-accredited engineering discipline required.
- Typically, 2 or more years of relevant experience in transmission line design or utility engineering. Equivalent combinations of training, practical experience, and performance will also be considered.
- FE/EIT preferred or in progress.
Desired Skills & Attributes
- Solid understanding of transmission line engineering principles, NESC/RUS compliance, and structure/foundation design.
- Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel), AutoCAD, Bluebeam; familiarity with other engineering modeling and analysis tools a plus.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, documentation, and coordination skills.
- Ability to interpret engineering inputs with limited oversight and translate direction into accurate and constructible design documents.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and maintain quality across concurrent assignments.
- Ability to mentor less-experienced staff and contribute to the improvement of standards, templates, and processes.

At BHMG, our pay ranges are broad to allow for movement within our organization and to accommodate different skill sets and levels of expertise. The pay range for this position is $85,000 - $115,000 annual. This range encompasses multiple levels of the role. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the pay range. This position is eligible to earn additional compensation including extra effort pay and an annual bonus incentive based on individual and company performance. Career level and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. We take into consideration a variety of factors including, but not limited to, skills, abilities, experience, education, credentials, and internal equity when determining the base salary offered.
