Hawai‘i Virtual Care (HVC) is a newly established behavioral healthcare company founded by the Owners of Crownview Co-Occurring Institute. With years of experience in behavioral healthcare and clinical program development, HVC is excited to expand into Hawai‘i and build a statewide virtual behavioral health program.

We are seeking a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) who is passionate about recovery-focused care and interested in helping establish and develop HVC’s substance use disorder services.

This position offers the opportunity to provide direct substance use counseling and recovery support while contributing to the development of programming, workflows, treatment processes, recovery resources, and team collaboration. As the organization grows, there may be opportunities to assume additional responsibilities in program development, staff support, quality improvement, and expansion of substance use disorder services.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Substance Use Disorder Counselor will provide individual and group substance use counseling, recovery planning, case management, care coordination, and virtual Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) services while collaborating with HVC’s multidisciplinary clinical team.

The ideal candidate is a compassionate, recovery-oriented professional who is comfortable working independently in a virtual environment and interested in contributing to the development of a growing statewide behavioral health program.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Conduct virtual substance use assessments and screenings to identify patterns of use, recovery needs, strengths, barriers, and appropriate treatment goals within the counselor’s scope of practice.
• Develop, implement, and update individualized substance use disorder treatment and recovery plans in collaboration with clients and the multidisciplinary treatment team.
• Provide virtual individual and group substance use counseling utilizing evidence-based approaches such as Motivational Interviewing (MI), relapse prevention, recovery skills development, psychoeducation, and other appropriate SUD interventions.
• Facilitate structured virtual Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) groups addressing relapse prevention, triggers and cravings, coping skills, recovery planning, healthy relationships, life skills, and development of recovery support systems.
• Monitor client participation, engagement, and progress throughout treatment.
• Identify barriers to recovery and collaborate with the treatment team regarding changes in client needs and appropriate interventions.
• Recognize and appropriately respond to relapse, crisis situations, and safety concerns in a telehealth environment by following established clinical and emergency protocols.

As an early member of the HVC behavioral health team, the Substance Use Disorder Counselor will have the opportunity to contribute to:

• Development and refinement of substance use disorder programming and workflows.
• Development of virtual IOP groups and recovery-focused curriculum.
• Treatment and recovery planning processes.
• Case management and care coordination processes.
• Documentation standards for substance use disorder services.
• Development of recovery resources and community referral networks.
• Quality-improvement initiatives.
• Strategies to improve client engagement, retention, continuity of care, and recovery support.
• Expansion and development of future substance use disorder and recovery services.

• Provide case management and care coordination to help clients connect with community resources, recovery supports, medical and behavioral health providers, housing, employment, and other appropriate services.
• Coordinate discharge and continuing-care planning to help clients establish ongoing recovery supports and resources following completion of services.
• Complete timely and accurate clinical documentation, including progress notes, treatment plan updates, case management notes, group documentation, and discharge planning.
• Maintain accurate and complete client records within the organization’s Electronic Health Record (EHR).
• Maintain client confidentiality and provide virtual services in accordance with HIPAA, professional ethical standards, organizational policies, telehealth requirements, and applicable Hawai‘i laws and regulations.
• Follow established clinical, safety, crisis-response, and emergency procedures.
• Collaborate with therapists, clinical leadership, and other members of the multidisciplinary treatment team regarding client progress, recovery needs, and barriers to treatment.
• Participate remotely in treatment team meetings, case consultation, staff training, and professional development related to substance use disorder treatment and recovery services, as appropriate to the contractor role.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Current Hawai‘i Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) credential.
• Must meet applicable requirements to provide telehealth services to clients located throughout the state.
• Experience working with individuals experiencing substance use disorders, recovery challenges, and co-occurring mental health concerns.
• Experience in an outpatient, Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), telehealth, residential, or community behavioral health setting preferred.
• Strong understanding of substance use disorder treatment, recovery principles, relapse prevention, stages of change, and recovery support systems.
• Experience utilizing evidence-based SUD approaches such as Motivational Interviewing (MI), relapse prevention, psychoeducation, and cognitive-behavioral strategies within the counselor’s scope of practice.
• Ability to effectively facilitate virtual SUD and recovery-focused groups while creating a safe, structured, and engaging therapeutic environment.
• Strong client engagement and assessment skills with the ability to identify strengths, barriers, recovery needs, and appropriate treatment goals.
• Experience with case management, care coordination, discharge planning, and connecting clients with community and recovery resources.
• Familiarity with Electronic Health Record (EHR) and telehealth platforms.
• Ability to maintain timely, accurate, and professional clinical documentation.
• Ability to recognize and appropriately respond to relapse, crisis situations, and client safety concerns while following established clinical and telehealth protocols.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with therapists, clinical leadership, community providers, and other members of a remote multidisciplinary treatment team.
• Ability to provide compassionate, culturally responsive, and recovery-oriented care to individuals from diverse backgrounds and communities throughout Hawai‘i.
• Strong organizational skills, professional boundaries, and commitment to maintaining client confidentiality, ethical standards, and HIPAA compliance.
• Reliable high-speed internet and a private, confidential workspace appropriate for providing telehealth services.

• Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) services

• Launching or expanding behavioral health or recovery services

The position will initially be structured as a 1099 independent contractor role at $50- $60 per hour, with hours based on client census and program needs.

As HVC’s client census and staffing needs increase, there may be an opportunity for the position to transition to a full-time salaried W-2 employee position.

Any future transition will depend on organizational growth, client census, operational needs, staffing requirements, and the needs of the clinical department.
