Senior Software Engineer, Backend (ML Feature Platform)

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Software Engineer, Backend (ML Feature Platform) based in Canada.

Join a high-impact engineering team focused on building the foundational platform that powers machine learning and intelligent decision-making at scale. In this role, you will develop backend systems that enable seamless feature creation, storage, and serving for machine learning applications used across the organization. You'll collaborate with experienced engineers, product managers, and cross-functional stakeholders to solve complex distributed systems challenges while improving platform reliability and scalability. This is an excellent opportunity for a backend engineer who enjoys building developer platforms, driving technical excellence, and creating infrastructure that accelerates innovation. Working in a remote-first environment, you'll have the autonomy to influence architecture, mentor teammates, and deliver solutions with company-wide impact.

Accountabilities:
  • Design, build, and enhance scalable backend services that support machine learning feature management, storage, and serving.
  • Own the delivery of key technical initiatives, leading projects from design through implementation while navigating ambiguity and balancing technical trade-offs.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, analysts, and other stakeholders to define technical solutions aligned with business objectives.
  • Improve the reliability, scalability, and availability of critical platform components by implementing monitoring, operational best practices, and performance optimizations.
  • Identify opportunities to improve engineering processes, platform capabilities, and system architecture while driving continuous technical innovation.
  • Promote engineering excellence through high-quality code reviews, technical documentation, design discussions, and knowledge sharing.
  • Mentor fellow engineers by providing technical guidance, constructive feedback, and leadership throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and operational support to maintain platform health and ensure reliable service delivery.
Requirements
  • 4+ years of professional experience designing, developing, and deploying scalable backend systems using languages such as Python or Kotlin.
  • Strong expertise building distributed systems with technologies such as AWS, Kubernetes, MySQL, or comparable cloud-native infrastructure.
  • Experience designing extensible architectures and delivering complex technical solutions in large-scale production environments.
  • Proven ability to write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code while safely implementing significant changes within large codebases.
  • Strong understanding of software engineering best practices, system reliability, monitoring, and operational excellence.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams to balance technical requirements, product priorities, and business objectives.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills with the ability to influence technical decisions.
  • A growth mindset with a proactive approach to learning, mentorship, and continuous improvement.
Benefits
  • Competitive annual base salary of CAD $153,000–$213,000, based on experience, skills, and location.
  • Remote-first work environment with opportunities available across eligible Canadian provinces.
  • Equity awards as part of the total compensation package.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage with premiums fully covered for employees and eligible dependents.
  • Flexible spending wallets for technology, wellness, food, lifestyle, and family-related expenses.
  • Competitive vacation allowance and paid holidays to support work-life balance.
  • Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP) with discounted share purchasing opportunities.
  • Inclusive workplace committed to accessibility, diversity, and professional growth.
