This role is critical to supporting federal security and suitability determinations through comprehensive background investigations that directly impact national security. You will conduct in-depth interviews and gather sensitive information to evaluate individuals’ eligibility for government employment, security clearances, and access to classified programs. The position requires a high level of integrity, discretion, and attention to detail, as you will handle confidential personal data governed by strict privacy regulations. You will work in a field-based environment, conducting interviews both remotely and in person, often involving travel across assigned regions. The role is ideal for professionals who are investigative, detail-oriented, and comfortable working independently while contributing to mission-critical government programs. Your work will directly support the protection of sensitive national interests and ensure compliance with federal investigative standards.
- Review completed background investigation materials to identify inconsistencies, errors, omissions, or missing information prior to initiating candidate interviews.
- Conduct structured interviews with employers, coworkers, neighbors, law enforcement officials, military personnel, family members, and personal references.
- Prepare detailed written interview statements that accurately capture findings and allow for objective evaluation of candidate suitability.
- Compile and organize investigative documentation into complete case files in accordance with federal guidelines and established procedures.
- Analyze collected information to identify adverse findings and prepare clear, objective summaries aligned with investigative standards.
- Conduct field-based and remote interviews while managing travel requirements of up to 50% as needed.
- Ensure all investigative activities comply with privacy regulations and federal security protocols.
- Active Top Secret security clearance is required.
- Completion of an NTS Background Investigator training program or equivalent certification.
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 50% of the time for field investigations.
- Ability to conduct both virtual and in-person interviews effectively and professionally.
- Strong interviewing, observation, and analytical skills with high attention to detail.
- Excellent written communication skills to produce clear, accurate, and objective investigative reports.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple cases, and meet strict deadlines.
- Strong ethical standards, discretion, and ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
- Preferred: Spanish language proficiency is an asset.
- Must be located near Northern Virginia, Atlanta, Seattle, or Salt Lake City.
