Job Summary:

The Project HSE Lead is the primary health, safety, and environmental resource for an assigned project. Embedded within Operations, this role works side-by-side with project leadership, field supervision, craft employees, and subcontractors to drive the daily execution of Ballard’s project-specific HSE program.

This is a hands-on opportunity for an experienced construction safety professional who thrives in complex, fast-moving project environments and knows how to build trust in the field. You will help shape how work is planned and performed, strengthen safe execution, and play a direct role in protecting our people while supporting the successful delivery of Ballard’s technically demanding marine and heavy civil projects.

Education:

· Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Construction Safety, or a related field preferred

· OSHA 30 required

· OSHA 510 and 500 preferred

· CHST, CSP, or other recognized safety certification preferred

Experience:

· 3+ years of construction safety or HSE experience, preferably supporting heavy civil, marine, industrial, or other safety-sensitive projects

· Experience implementing project-specific HSE programs, conducting field inspections, identifying hazards, and monitoring regulatory compliance

· Experience leading incident investigations, corrective actions, safety training, workforce engagement, and HSE reporting

· Experience partnering with project leadership, field supervision, craft employees, subcontractors, clients, and regulatory representatives

· Marine construction, barge, vessel, crane, heavy equipment, or other high-risk operational experience preferred

Skills:

· Strong knowledge of construction safety practices, OSHA requirements, and project-specific HSE programs

· Ability to identify hazards, assess risk, and recommend practical corrective actions

· Strong incident investigation, documentation, and reporting skills

· Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to engage craft employees, field leadership, subcontractors, and clients

· Ability to lead safety training, orientations, toolbox talks, and workforce engagement activities.

· Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced project environment

· Proficiency with Microsoft Office and applicable HSE tracking and reporting systems

· Ability to work independently while maintaining strong collaboration with Operations and project leadership

Responsibilities:

Project HSE Leadership

· Lead the daily execution of the project-specific HSE program in partnership with Operations and field leadership

· Maintain a strong field presence to identify hazards, address unsafe conditions, and support safe work practices

· Exercise stop-work authority when unsafe conditions or behaviors are identified

Planning, Compliance & Incident Management

· Develop and maintain required HSE plans, AHAs, environmental documentation, and project records

· Monitor compliance with company policies, client requirements, and applicable regulations

· Lead incident response, investigations, reporting, and corrective actions

Training & Performance

· Conduct safety orientations, training, and workforce engagement activities

· Track and communicate HSE metrics, trends, and project performance

· Perform other duties as assigned to support project needs

Physical Demands/Working Environment:

· Work is performed in both office and field environments, including active construction sites, barges, piers, vessels, and other marine settings in varying weather and project conditions

· Travel to project sites, meetings, training events, and company locations may be required and may include travel by land, water, or air

· Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including hard hats, safety glasses, respirators, and fall protection equipment, as needed

· Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, squat, and navigate uneven terrain for extended periods

· Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds

· Ability to remain stationary and work at a computer for extended periods

· Ability to relocate as required to support business and project needs

Salary Range:

· $90K - $120K

· Pay is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
