Description:

Position Summary: The purpose of this position is to provide non-technical support and assistance to the professional laboratory staff.

Position responsibilities:

  • Collects adequate and correct blood specimens by venipuncture or micro-technique on adults, children and infants.
  • Follows Laboratory department policies and procedures to (1) correctly identify the patient before any blood specimen is drawn and (2) correctly labels all patient specimen obtained.
  • Sorts and processes patient specimen received in the specimen receipt area of the laboratory and maintains an orderly and timely flow of specimens to the technical laboratory areas.
  • Initiates Glucose Tolerance procedures and collects the remaining specimens at specified times. Draws “stat” blood specimens for Chemistry, Hematology and other times specimens, enzymes, coagulation, etc… as indicated.
  • Instructs patients and family members in specimen collection and picks up and delivers to the laboratory a variety of clinical specimens other than blood.
  • Maintains accurate and orderly worksheets, logs, and records required according to established departmental and facility protocols.
  • Displays courtesy to the patients and visitors at all times and shows concern for and, an understanding of the patient; promotes the comfort and well- being of the patient as much as possible while performing collection procedures. Patience and persistence are needed when dealing with patients from whom blood specimens are difficult to obtain.
  • Maintains a positive rapport with the facility staff and projects an image of professionalism in conduct and appearance at all times.
  • Prepares specimens for reference lab send outs.
  • Schedules morning appointments for various lab draws.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:

Essential skills and experience:

  • Must have successfully completed a Phlebotomy program through a technical school.
  • Registered by the American Society of Clinical Pathology, American Medical Certification Association, or equivalent preferred.
  • Two to five years of experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of superficial veins and arteries, e.g. Cephalic, Basilic, and Median Basilic veins and the Brachial, Radial and Ulnar arteries.
  • Competent indifferent venesection equipment: tourniquets, vacutainer systems, syringes and needles, microtainers, and “butterfly” needle collection devices.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of the different restricted isolation procedures and protective requirements, and the different collection tubes, anticoagulants, and skin sites for collection requirements of the patients.
  • Proficient with handling and processing of pathogenic/infectious or communicable disease specimens.

Valued but not required skills and experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher.

Physical Demands: While performing duties of job, employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Employee must occasionally lift and/ or move up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment: Work is performed in an ambulatory health care setting. There is common exposure to contagious and infectious diseases. The work may include a certain amount of exposure to hostile and emotionally disturbed patients, families and visitors.
