Job Description
Position Summary: The purpose of this position is to perform all routine chairside dental assisting functions in order to allow the dental team to function as efficiently as possible.
Position responsibilities:
- Mandatory 7:45am Staff Meeting.
- Provides dental chairside assisting for Dentist.
- Has patient complete medical history reviews medical history for significant findings. Records examination and treatment information in patient record.
- Make sure that informed consent forms are completed for all procedures.
- Takes preliminary impression, removes sutures, places surgical gauze following extraction, places and removes rubber dam, applies desensitizing agents.
- Performs routine dental laboratory procedures including pouring and trimming models.
- Responsible for cleaning, sharpening, packaging and sterilizing all dental instruments and for proper storage when not in use.
- Correctly expose, intra and extra-oral radiographs, follow x-ray safety guidelines including wearing radiation exposure badge while in the dental clinic.
- Performs coronal prophy polishing and applies topical fluoride treatment if the Assistant has the proper Expanded Function Certifications.
- Uses hand instruments for various dental needs.
- Relays to patients post treatment instructions as well as motivating and instructing patients in proper home care and disease prevention techniques.
- Orders/updates need to order list with necessary supplies and keeps clinic properly stocked at all times.
- Maintains dental clinic in a clean and orderly manner. Provides routine maintenance on all equipment. Cleans units between patients and at days end.
- Takes and records blood pressure based on dental guidelines - Patients 18 or over at each dental visit.
- Other duties as assigned.
Essential skills, experience and Certification:
- Have or obtain an Oklahoma Dental Assistant Permit
- Have or obtain OSBD Radiation Safety Expanded Function Certification.
- Skill and dexterity in performing all intra-oral and extra-oral techniques.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Knowledge of dental terminology to accurately record treatment and examination information in patient file, and ability to file and retrieve patient records electronically.
- Knowledge of dental anatomy and radiographic techniques in order to correctly expose, process, and mount radiographs.
- Ability to recognize common dental disorders such as dental caries and periodontal inflammation.
- Knowledge of steps and techniques required for placement of restorations and pit and fissure sealants.
- Follows safety and infection control guidelines.
- Knowledge and skill of tooth isolation techniques required to maintain a dry field for placement of restorations and sealants.
Valued but not required skills and experience:
- Additional Expanded Function Certifications.
- Previous Dental Experience
- Associates or Bachelors Degree

Physical Demands: While performing duties of job, employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Employee must occasionally lift and/ or move up to 25 pounds.
Work Environment: Working in close contact with patients mean exposure to communicable diseases. Work demands sitting and bending for periods of time while providing dental care. Frequent fine motor muscular demands on hands is required while using hand instruments and headpieces. Safety glasses, gloves and masks are required when doing any patient procedure.
