About This Position
Under the general supervision of the Athletics & Aquatics Supervisor, the Aquatics Coordinator assists in the developing and implementation of high-quality aquatic programs. Coordinator oversees the daily supervision and operations of the Merkel Aquatic Center & Petersen Park Beach. Aquatics Coordinator will help provide quality swim lessons, special events, rentals, open swim, and swim team to the surrounding community.
Aquatics Coordinator is to be a liaison between the participants and program department in conveying information or program changes. Aquatics Coordinator is to help with schedule development, program implementation, employee supervision, and staff trainings. They play an integral role in the development of building strong character values in staff and program participants. The staff is a representative of the philosophy, mission, and goal of the City of McHenry and its parks and recreation department. Staff must strive to work cooperatively with the Athletics & Aquatics Supervisor and fellow employees to achieve the goals and objectives of the City of McHenry Parks & Recreation department.
DECISION MAKING AND JUDGMENT
- Oversee the direction and development of aquatics program and staff

- Must deal with emergency situations and rescues
- Displaying a high level of professionalism by devoting attention to task at hand and not being distracted while performing duties on stand or on deck
- Ability to respond to patrons and staff concerns and correct inappropriate behavior immediately
- Develop relationships with members and obtain regular feedback on programs
- Facilitate a friendly and welcoming aquatics facility and build team mentality in staff
ADMINISTRATIVE
- Overall responsibility for maintaining swimming pool over the course of daily activities, including but not limited to adding, monitoring and maintaining proper chemical levels; regular cleaning of pool, deck, changing rooms and surrounding areas; inspecting and maintaining lifeguard equipment; and making sure facilities are secured when not in use
- Coordinator and manage pool programs including but not limited to special events, swim lessons, swim team, rentals, programs, and open swim
- Maintaining a daily maintenance log for aquatics facilities and ensure that all documents are submitted to Aquatics Supervisor daily (chemicals added, chemical readings, number of participants, incidents, equipment logs etc.)
- Keeping aquatics facilities clean and safe for patrons (Reporting any suspicious behavior to Athletics & Aquatics Supervisor)
- Properly storing and maintain all aquatic equipment
- Helping Aquatics & Athletics Supervisor develop quality programming and provide construct feedback
- Set-up and take down of assigned areas daily
- Wearing proper uniform and swimsuit daily
- Develop lifeguard schedules, approve staff substitutions, and ensure staff are at designated posts at scheduled times
- Filling in as needed in various aquatics and athletics positions during the season
- Must be available to work all shifts and locations (including but not limited to weekends, holidays, nights, waterfront, pool, etc.)
SUPERVISION
- Responsible for scanning and watching patrons in the aquatic facilities at all times
- Quickly respond to emergency situations and active facility Emergency Action Plan (EAP)
- Assign staff additional duties while in down time and placing extra guards on deck as need to stay in ratio or to help supervise large swimmer volumes. (1 guard per 25 swimmers)
- Evaluate and review staff performance by leading staff in-services, meetings, and reviews under direction of Aquatics Supervisor
- If Aquatics Supervisor is unavailable, responsible for selecting, instructing, directing, and supervising the flow of work
- Demonstrates constant and clear communication in a reasonable amount of time between Aquatics Supervisor, Concessions Managers, Aquatics Staff, and participants
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be motivated and able to implement oral and written instructions.
- Must be able to communicate respectfully and effectively with superiors, co-workers, members, parents, and children.
- Must be mentally prepared to handle emergency situations and rescues
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds
- Must be able to communicate verbally, including projecting their voice across distances
- Ability to hear noises and distress signals
- Must be able to move to various locations, including in and out of an elevated chair
- Must be able to evaluate situations and make decisions within established policies and standards
- Requires frequent heavy lifting and moving of equipment and supplies
- Knowledge and physical ability to respond in an emergency
ACCURACY
- Requires accurate record keeping for programs
PARTICIPANT SAFETY
- Requires considerable attention and alertness to safety hazards
- Must be able to take on a leadership role in matters of safety
PRINCIPLE ACTIVITIES:
- Interpret and enforce pool rules and policies to ensure safety of all aquatics staff, participants, and swimmers
- Execute emergency procedures as needed
- Promote the City of McHenry Parks & Recreation aquatics programs
- Lock and secure all doors/buildings when aquatics facilities are closed
- Keep accurate records for aquatics programs and facilities
- Maintain proper pool chemical levels, a clean and sanitary pool & beach, and regular cleaning schedule
- Be an ambassador and committed member of the aquatics team
- Other related duties as assigned by the supervisor

- Knowledge and physical ability to respond in emergency situations
- Candidate must be energetic, outgoing, and interested in being a positive role model
- Candidate must possess strong oral and interpersonal communication skills
- Candidate must possess ability to be flexible and adjust to changing work environment
- Candidate must possess creativity, initiative, and willingness to learn and implement new ideas
- Candidate must be trained and certified in Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Must be an example of good moral behavior
- Must have previous experience and knowledge with aquatics program
- Desire to work with children, staff, and parents daily
- Willingness to project the City of McHenry image by personal adherence to all policies
- Demonstrate the ability to interpret and administer all policies, established by the City of McHenry Parks & Recreation department, to all employees and volunteers
- Current First Aid, CPR, AED, American Red Cross Lifeguard & American Red Cross WSI certifications or obtained before first shift
- At least 2 years experience with an aquatics program in a supervisor aspect
- Prefer one or more years of college in a related field (i.e. recreation, child development, sports management, physical education, etc.)
