As power demands continue to increase, the current aging infrastructure will require substantial support to meet the requirements and ensure reliability. Substations are crucial for delivering reliable and safe power to our communities. THE OPPORTUNITY
As an Engineer on our Substation team, you will be responsible for driving the preparation of substation drawing sets. This role focuses on applying substation design standards, producing general drawings, and supporting engineers and designers in developing safe, constructible design packages.
Key Responsibilities:
• Electrical (P&C) Design: Develop one-lines, panel layouts, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, and cable schedules; perform intermediate design calculations and documentation;
incorporate SCADA/communications requirements and review vendor approval drawings for compliance.
• Physical Design: Create equipment arrangements, physical plans, grounding layouts, conduit/trench plans, and foundation location plans; produce sections, elevations, and detail views;
apply conductor/cable limitations and constructability considerations; perform basic design calculations and prepare supporting documentation.
• Independently prepare bills of materials, material specifications, and required project submittal packages while completing all design checklists.
• Integrate survey, civil, and structural inputs into substation electrical and physical designs and update drawings based on construction feedback.
• Maintain organized project documentation, drawing lists, and files across multiple active projects.
Requirements:Education/Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or related ABET accredited engineering discipline is required.
• Typically, 2 or more years of relevant experience in substation design.
• FE/EIT preferred or in progress.
Skills:
• Strong understanding of substation engineering principles, codes, and design practices (e.g., NESC, IEEE, client standards).
• Strong understanding of substation design standards and drawings (electrical or physical).
• Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel) AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and Excel; familiarity with analysis tools (e.g., WinIGS, Visual) a plus.
• Strong problem-solving, communication, documentation, and coordination skills.
• Ability to interpret engineering inputs with limited oversight and translate direction into accurate design documents.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and maintain quality across concurrent assignments.
• Ability to mentor less-experienced staff and contribute to the improvement of standards, templates, and processes.

At BHMG, our pay ranges are broad to allow for movement within our organization and to accommodate different skill sets and levels of expertise. We take into consideration a variety of factors including, but not limited to, skills, abilities, experience, education, credentials, and internal equity when determining the base salary offered. Roles are eligible for additional rewards including annual incentive payments based on individual and company performance. The compensation range for this position is $80,000.00 - $140,000.00. This range encompasses multiple levels of the role. Career level and compensation depend upon each applicant’s credentials.
