Under the direct supervision of a supervisor/manager/pharmacist performs medication related tasks such as packaging, preparation of all forms of medications, record keeping, and all aspects of drug distribution. Assists in the transportation and handling of chemotherapy and controlled substances.
I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Processes and releases orders using pharmacy dispense queue.
2. Oncology order set up through gathering drug, diluent, base solution, tubing, filters, labels, as well as anything else required for compounding.
3. Delivers patient medications to patient’s rooms and medication room areas.
4. Maintains inventory, reorders, restocks, and monitors expiration dates of all medications in the pharmacy as well as floor stock medication provided via Pyxis.
5. Familiar with pharmacy technology and equipment. Capable of troubleshooting technical problems.
6. Prepares and packages all forms of medications.
7. Maintains required documentation in accordance with regulatory and hospital requirements and maintains respect for patient confidentiality.
8. Generates necessary pharmacy reports.
9. Conducts medication room inspections in assigned patient care area in accordance with regulatory requirements.
10. Assembles drugs in an accurate and efficient manner.
11. Repackages bulk drugs and supplies into units of use containers.
12. Maintains a clean work area and assists in quality indicator monitoring.
13. Assists with yearly inventory in assigned areas.
14. Participates in identifying problems or areas for improvement and assists supervisor with problem solving projects and improving operations.
15. Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement activities and/or teams.
16. Prepares intravenous (IV) drugs using aseptic technique in compounding cytotoxic chemotherapy, targeted monoclonal antibodies, immunotherapy, oncolytic viruses and other IV drugs.
17. Cleans IV room floors and surfaces according to institutional policy.
Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities:
1. Complies with established departmental policies, procedures and objectives.
2. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
3. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
4. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
5. Respects diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
6. Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
7. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Current license with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy.
3. Certified by one of the national governing bodies such as Pharmacy Technician Certification Board PTCB, or the National Healthcareer Association ExCPT.
Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. 3 years of previous experience.
2. Position requires proficiency in math and the knowledge and ability to use a computer.
3. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions with accuracy, efficiency, and dependability.
4. Positive work ethic, motivated and professional demeanor to promote teamwork in the department.
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:
Work is considered light to medium, with a considerable amount of standing and walking. May require occasional pushing and pulling of carts. Position requires work in doors, in patient care areas, in a pharmacy office environment, as well as in hazardous and non-hazardous IV clean rooms.
Change to 1 year experience in preparing chemotherapy and hazardous medications (from 3 years)
Coverage for available shifts: 8am-4pm Mon-Friday
