Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position assists in planning, managing, and implementing all aquatics department safety programs and activities in assigned branch(es). Assists and participates in marketing and special events. Ensures day-to-day program operations are delivered in accordance with operating standards for quality and safety. Assists in interviewing, scheduling and supervising qualified staff. Supports branch leadership in the implementation of the annual campaign. The coordinator must be knowledgeable, professional, and show concern for programs, all members, participants and guests.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Ensures aquatic safety programs and services meet community needs of assigned branch(es) to include supervising and growing existing program activities and establishing new program activities in support of membership retention and growth.
- Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information.
- Builds effective and authentic relationships with participants and families.
- Develops and maintains relationships with parent groups and other agencies related to aquatic safety program areas.
- Engage students and parents of programming.
- Conducts regular/ frequent sanitation of all equipment (rescue and member used), and assigned areas as outlined by leadership.
- Supervises employees in assigned accountabilities, monitors program operations, schedules and verifies time sheets and actual hours worked.
- Ensures that Y program standards are met and safety procedures are always followed, specifically the association’s child protection policies, child abuse and neglect guidelines, and proper reporting procedures.
- Organizes, cleans and puts away all program materials. Reports damaged materials and take them out of circulation.
- Demonstrates a working knowledge of Y mission, values, purpose, and goals. Strives for the highest standards of program excellence.
- Be actively and visibly involved with members, volunteers and staff in a positive, friendly manner that communicates and demonstrates the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
- Notify supervisor staffing needs, assist in the interview process.
- Identify training needs and initiate development activities of supervisees.
- Assure that new employees’ complete orientation and training according to established guidelines and provide on the job training as required.
- assist YMCA leadership with instructor in-service training including but not limited to; keeping track of certifications, training new instructors, and keeping leadership updated on staffing needs.
- Keeps employees informed as to association, branch, and department events.
- Attend community events as needed
- Performs all other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- High school diploma required; Associate degree preferred
Experience:
- Minimum of one (1) year of related experience working in aquatic programing
- Minimum of one (1) year of aquatic instruction
- Minimum of one (1) year supervisory experience preferred
Certification(s) and Requirements:
- Current CPR/AED Pro, Emergency O2, Current First Aid
- Current Y lifeguarding or American Red Cross Lifeguarding, Instructor Certification required
- Water Safety Instructor or YMCA Swim Instructor certification preferred
Technical Skills and Knowledge:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, adequate speaking, hearing and writing skills appropriate for interacting with both children and adults.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people (children and parents) from all social and economic segments of the community.
- Knowledge and maturity to observe children’s behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety practices and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
- Ability to manage the daily administrative, program-related and supervisory responsibilities of an aquatics program.
- Excellent personal computer skills and experience with standard business software.
- Within 30 days of hire, completion of applicable YMCA program-specific and Operational training.

- Ability to work effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions and perceptions
- Willingness and ability to be a mandated reporters for any signs or suspicion of child abuse and neglect. All employees are required to follow the child abuse and neglect reporting process: completion of Suspected Child Abuse/Neglect reporting form, calling children protective services (696-Kids) and notifying your immediate supervisor and branch executive.
