Job Description
1. POSITION SUMMARY3. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
The Life Safety Code Compliance and 5S Specialist is responsible for ensuring that Hailiang Copper Texas's manufacturing facility consistently meets all applicable Life Safety Code (NFPA 101) requirements and maintains a high standard of workplace organization through the implementation and sustainment of the 5S methodology. This role serves as the subject matter expert for facility life safety systems, emergency egress, fire protection, and hazard control while simultaneously leading the 5S program across all production and support areas. The Specialist works cross-functionally with operations, maintenance, engineering, and EHS leadership to build a culture of safety, compliance, and continuous improvement.
2. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES- Conduct routine and periodic inspections of all facility areas to ensure ongoing compliance with NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, including means of egress, exit signage, emergency lighting, fire doors, and occupancy load requirements.
- Coordinate and document annual and periodic Life Safety assessments; track and close all identified deficiencies within established timelines.
- Serve as the primary liaison with the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), the Texas State Fire Marshal's Office, and insurance carriers during facility inspections, plan reviews, and permit activities.
- Maintain and update the Life Safety drawings, floor plans, and egress diagrams in coordination with Engineering; ensure all changes are reflected in the facility's fire protection record set.
- Oversee testing, inspection, and maintenance scheduling for all fire protection systems including sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, emergency lighting, exit signs, portable fire extinguishers, and suppression systems, in accordance with NFPA 10, 25, 72, and 101.
- Manage fire door inspections and corrective action tracking per NFPA 80.
- Develop, implement, and maintain the facility Emergency Action Plan (EAP) and conduct annual drills, including fire evacuation, shelter-in-place, and severe weather response.
- Maintain the facility's Life Safety Code compliance binder and all associated documentation in audit-ready condition at all times.
- Design, implement, and sustain a facility-wide 5S (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain) program across all manufacturing, warehouse, and office areas.
- Develop 5S standards, visual management systems, shadow boards, floor marking guidelines, and labeling conventions; ensure consistent application throughout the facility.
- Conduct scheduled and unannounced 5S audits of all departments; score results, track trends, and report findings to department managers and EHS leadership.
- Lead or co-facilitate 5S Kaizen events and improvement blitzes; train cross-functional teams in 5S principles and lean workplace organization.
- Establish a 5S recognition program to drive employee engagement and sustained participation.
- Coordinate with Maintenance and Operations to ensure that 5S improvements are integrated into preventive maintenance and standard work procedures.
- Develop and maintain a 5S audit calendar, scoring database, and visual tracking board accessible to all departments.
- Participate in incident investigations related to life safety or housekeeping deficiencies; complete root cause analyses and implement corrective/preventive actions.
- Support the HSE Manager in conducting Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) for new or modified work tasks.
- Assist with OSHA compliance activities including regulatory inspections, record-keeping, and reporting.
- Serve as a member of the facility Emergency Response Team (ERT) and support emergency preparedness training.
- Collaborate with Engineering during facility expansions, renovations, or new equipment installations to ensure life safety and 5S considerations are incorporated from project inception.
- Identify opportunities to integrate 5S and life safety requirements into new employee onboarding and annual safety training programs.
- Maintain all life safety inspection records, testing logs, corrective action trackers, and permits in compliance with applicable NFPA standards and regulatory requirements.
- Generate monthly and quarterly reports on life safety compliance status, open corrective actions, and 5S audit scores for presentation to HSE leadership and plant management.
- Manage the HSE SharePoint/document control system entries related to life safety and 5S program documentation.
- Ensure all contractor documentation (certificates of insurance, safety plans, inspection reports) related to life safety system servicing is collected, reviewed, and filed.
- Prepare and submit required regulatory reports and notifications to state and local authorities as directed by the HSE Manager.
- Experience in an HSE, fire protection, or facilities safety role within a manufacturing, industrial, or heavy industrial environment.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of NFPA 101 (Life Safety Code), NFPA 10, 25, 72, and 80.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); experience with EHS management software or document control systems.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
