Director of Plant Operations

Job Summary

Position provides day to day management and oversight for all facilities operations. Responsible for hospital compliance with all statutory and licensure requirements for all accrediting and regulatory agencies (i.e., Joint Commission, Fire Inspections, Department of Health, etc.). Supervises and manages the facilities team, to include the boiler room operations and plant maintenance personnel. Assists the Senior Director of Operations with subject matter expertise for planning any maintenance, new construction, or renovations to the facility or equipment.

In addition, position is responsible for assisting with property management of all leased space. Ensures the safe and efficient operation of the hospital and adjacent properties.

Performs duties in support of the hospital’s mission to ensure the highest quality of patient care in an economically sound and efficient manner.

Essential Functions

  • Oversees and directs the day-to-day operations of the Plant Operations Department, to include the boiler room.
  • Provide leadership in the development of campus Facility Master Plans and assists with the management of all projects.
  • Responsible for the development of projects, impacting major building systems, or effects Life safety standards.
  • Advise with senior executives on consultants utilized for any size project that requires State DOH review and approval.
  • Assist with the development of plans and specifications, bid process, and/or contractor selection on projects.
  • Manage the daily activities of the in-house maintenance and boiler room staff, including scheduling, performance evaluations, and projects/assignments.
  • Assist with the evaluation of and recommendation for short and long-term repair or replacement of infrastructure and utilities equipment.
  • Ensure that all invoices are processed in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Develop/foster contacts with facility related contractors (I.e. - elevators, plumbing, HVAC, mechanical, etc.).
  • Assist with developing and maintaining a complete inventory of CWH owned physical structures and identify capital expenditures required to maintain structures.
  • Remain current on regulations that may affect facility operations and licensing.
  • Identify potential energy savings and overall cost containment through the development of alternative contracting and production methods.
  • Manages the department in a fiscally responsible manner while ensuring that the needs of the facility are being met. Review utilities consumption and recommend ways to minimize cost.
  • Actively participates in all required meetings and committees, as appropriate.
  • Provide on-going education for department by conducting monthly in-service meeting for staff.
  • Ensure that all staff have the necessary licenses and experience to perform their job requirements. Continually assess and train staff on new techniques to enforce complete competency.
  • Ensure that all necessary inspections are conducted as required so that the facility remains efficient and within compliance.
  • Maintain all logs that are required for facility maintenance and inspection.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for the Environment of Care chapters as they relate to the Joint Commission.
  • Participate in Environment of Care rounds and committee. Ensure that items identified during the rounds are addressed in a timely manner or forwarded to the Senior Director of Operations for additional support and direction for completion.
  • Manage the upkeep of equipment and supplies to meet health and safety standards.
  • Inspect building structures to determine the need for repairs or renovations and pass these suggestions to the Senior Director of Operations.
  • Assist with the maintenance of life safety equipment.

Minimum Education/Certifications
Certification in Engineering, Construction, Architecture, Facilities Management

Three years of progressive experience in general management and oversight of major construction/renovation projects

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.

Three (3) years of experience working in a supervisory or manager position in a healthcare organization.

Minimum Work Experience

Three (3) years of relevant experience in healthcare construction, successful preparation for Joint Commission (and other regulatory bodies) inspections, and general facilities management within a healthcare system.

Ability to perform management skills: assess, plan, organize, implement, educate, revise, and document various employee relation aspects, etc. is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Sedentary: lifting 10-20 pounds occasionally and/or negligible amount frequently.

Knowledge of proper body mechanics is essential.

Occasional forward bending, crouching, knelling, twisting, climbing, reaching forward or overhead and keyboard entry.
