About This Position
Forsyth County's General Services Department has an opening for an Automotive Technician. The Automotive Technician is a hands-on tech that works on a wide variety of vehicles. This position will have the ability to work on fleet vehicles, emergency vehicles, as well as specialty vehicles. Technicians perform everything ranging from PM’s and tire changes to engine replacements and vehicle upfits.
Work Schedule: 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday with on-call work as needed.
Uniforms, safety shoes, and tool stipends are offered to qualified employees.
A successful candidate should have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
Ability to estimate time and materials needed to complete a job.
Ability to diagnose causes of defective operation and to perform major and minor overhauls on a variety of equipment.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
Ability to follow written direction in specialized vehicle manuals.
Considerable knowledge of the uses of a variety of repair tools and special testing equipment.
Considerable knowledge of the theory, care, and operation of gasoline and diesel engines.
Lifting 50-100 lbs occasionally, 25-50 lbs. frequently or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly.

Completion of a one year technical school program in automotive repair and at least two years of responsible automotive repair work on a variety of vehicles; or graduation from high school or GED and at least three years relevant experience.
Valid driver's license required.
Must have NC Vehicle Inspection License (or the ability to acquire within 60 days of employment).
A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement.
Current ASE Certifications preferred.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Inspects, services, and repairs a variety of vehicles; may specialize in Sheriff's vehicles as well as other vehicles.
Inspects and diagnoses the operation of gasoline and diesel automotive equipment in order to determine the need for repairs.
Conducts complete tune-ups-ups in installing plugs, condensers, coils, rotors, distributor caps,
wiring and sets proper timing.
Overhauls brakes by honing wheels and master cylinders, turning drums, installing new linings, and bleeding the system.
Repairs or installs doors, glass, locks, shock absorbers, sirens, tires, and other equipment.
Disassembles engines and does general engine overhaul work.
Drives a wrecker to respond to disabled or wrecked county vehicles.
Performs N.C. vehicle safety inspections.
Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles as scheduled.
Overhauls transmissions and differentials.
Overhauls cooling and fuel systems and makes simple body repairs.
Performs related work as required.
Maintaining a specific license such as a driver's license in good standing, without a lapse or loss of a privilege to drive in compliance with North Carolina law, and in compliance with applicable DOT standards for commercial motor vehicle drivers if required to perform the duties assigned to the position.
