Job Overview:
Seeking an Advanced Practice Nurse-for the Inpatient Programs and the Outpatient Ambulatory Endocrinology Service.
The primary purpose of the Endocrinology Practice Nurse position is to serve as an expert in the delivery of advanced nursing care to patients with endocrine disorders, especially patients with diabetes mellitus.
For the latter, the advanced practice nurse will also be a Certified Diabetic Educator CDE/ CDCES (certified diabetes care and education specialist).
Qualifications:
Required:
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with a minimum of a Masters’ Degree required
- RN License
- APN License
- Certified Nurse Practitioner by the Board of Nursing with prescriptive authority in the State of New Jersey (CDS and DEA)
- BLS
- Diabetes experience
Preferred:
- Certification as a Diabetic Educator, CDE OR CDCES (certified diabetes care and education specialist)

Essential Functions:

In collaboration with the attending physician, maintains responsibility for the coordination and direct care of patients within the scope of practice for Endocrinology, maintains clinical protocols as necessary, and provides patient education.
Responsible for patient care in a high volume outpatient environment and shows flexibility and makes independent decisions in sometimes high stress situations.
Expertly handles unexpected and highly sensitive situations related to the diverse problems of patients with diabetes mellitus
Assists physicians in evaluating patients and providing diagnoses and treatment plans during outpatients visit.
Performs full medical histories and physical examinations, formulate diagnoses, treatment plans, and orders on patients seen in clinic.
Participates in development and implementation of patients’ diabetes education. This includes demonstration of blood glucose monitoring equipment and insulin pump use, and care and nutritional instruction to control sugar spikes.
Coordinates multidisciplinary health care services and arranges diagnostic tests as ordered by physicians, determines when patients may benefit from social work or nutrition services.
Educates patients and staff on guidelines for the administration and self-injection of insulin and other drugs designed to control the increase in blood glucose i.e. AIC result.
Helps implement protocols for diabetes mellitus and other endocrine disorders.
Triages patient inquiries and communicates test results.
Responsible for the pre-certification and pre-authorization of prescriptions and for calling in prescription refills.
Establishes priorities for nursing care through patient assessment and develops nursing care plans.
Records medical information within the patients’ electronic medical record
Orients new staff. Assists in reviewing and revising policies and procedures.
Assesses patient eligibility and reviews patient medical history for inclusion in clinical studies.
