Job Title:Welding TechnologistLocation:Charlotte, NCJob Summary and Description:

The major function of this position is to perform advanced welding and materials related research using various equipment in EPRI’s state of the art Welding Lab. The focus for this position is mechanized arc welding but will also frequently expand to other welding and materials related testing equipment.
This position:
• Supports EPRI Project/Program needs for hands on support of welding and related activities in the Welding Lab.
• Works under supervision of EPRI Project Managers (PM) who establish test requirements and overall scope of study/project.
• Supports development of welding apparatus and evaluation of equipment capabilities.
• Develops unique welding procedures and process parameters to meet emerging needs (such as new applications, materials, or equipment technology).
• Requires documentation of all process parameters, equipment settings and other test/study data as applicable to the specific project.
Due to staff needs, this position may also provide occasional support to machine shop or facilities if necessary.

Education and Experience
Require General Education requirements for High School Diploma with 10 years of experience in welding disciplines including expertise with all common arc welding processes, mechanized/automated welding systems, and weld tooling.
Associates Degree in Welding Technology with 3+ years of experience in welding disciplines including expertise with all common arc welding processes, mechanized/automated welding systems, and weld tooling.
Bachelor of Science – Welding Engineering Technology degree with experience with mechanized/automated welding systems and weld tooling

• Candidates must be able to exercise judgment, diligence, and attention to detail and demonstrate an aptitude for carrying out responsible technical assignments
• Effectively work as part of a team
• Intermediate verbal and written communication skills
• Works with subject matter experts to conduct specific research tasks and complete projects
• Works closely with contractors or staff to complete project research
• Familiarity with standard MS Office suite
• Ability to manage their time to support multiple projects
• Ability to learn new pieces of equipment and processes

The candidate should be proficient with:
• Manual welding processes (e.g. GTAW, GMAW, SMAW, and FCAW)
• Mechanized GTAW
• Other high energy density welding (i.e., laser welding) and robotics is preferred but not necessary.

Provides technical assistance and advice to Engineers, Project Managers and Program Managers with minimal supervision. Provides data and analysis and develops systems that impact R&D results and improves internal efficiencies in key areas. Functions as a senior technical advisor to various technical personnel in the area of laboratory analysis and testing. Has considerable freedom in planning work and carrying out assignments. Determines methods and procedures on new assignments. Performs engineering or scientific services that may include but are not limited to the following (in compliance with current industry and Government practices):

• Tests and evaluation

• Technology planning

• Systems architecture development

• Requirements development

• Concept development

• Systems design, development and integration

• Systems operation and construction

• Integrated logistics support

• Modeling and simulation

Education:

Certification and/or Associate Degree in Engineering or equivalent experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• 5-7 years prior experience as a technician in at least one of the primary engineering or scientific disciplines.

• Must be able to set up, assemble, install or build components of experimental apparatus or equipment.

• Expertise in an area and significant experience and training related to using specific tools, techniques and processes.

The salary range for this position is $65,000 USD to $71,000 USD annually.This salary range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on various factors, including without limitation applicant's education, experience, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. The salary may also be adjusted based on applicant's geographic location.This role is eligible to participate in EPRI’s annual incentive program. The amount of incentive varies and is subject to the terms and conditions of the plan.This role is eligible to participate in EPRI’s standard employee benefit programs, which currently include the following: medical, dental, vision, 401k, STD/LTD and paid family leave, life and accident insurance, paid time off (flexible vacation, sick leave, and holiday pay).EPRI participates in E-Verify, an online system operated jointly by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration (SSA).
