Position Summary:

The Department of Music at Arkansas State University invites applications for a Temporary Full-Time Instructor of Music.

The preferred candidate is expected to be an outstanding leader, music educator, and performer for undergraduate- and graduate-level music students. This is a 9-month teaching appointment for the 2026-2027 academic year. Start Date: 16 August 2026.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Teach applied voice lessons to undergraduate and/or graduate music majors
  • Direct one choral ensemble including rehearsal planning, performance preparation, and student evaluation
  • Teach undergraduate coursework in choral conducting, choral literature, and choral sequencing
  • Maintain regular office hours and provide mentorship to assigned students as appropriate
  • Collaborate with music faculty in support of student recruitment, auditions, juries, recitals, and ensemble performances
  • Participate in departmental meetings and other teaching-related activities as requested
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and academic progress
  • This position is teaching-centered, therefore there is no expectation of service
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• Demonstrated excellence in collegiate-level vocal and choral instruction
• Strong knowledge of vocal pedagogy, choral rehearsal techniques, conducting, and choral repertoire
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
• Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students
• Ability to organize and manage multiple instructional responsibilities effectively
• Commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment

General Days/Hours:

Monday - Friday
8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Evening and weekend rehearsals or performances may be required.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master's degree in music, Choral Conducting, Vocal Performance, Music Education, or a closely related field from an accredited institution by the appointment start date (doctorate preferred)

• Demonstrated experience teaching applied voice and/or directing choral ensembles at the collegiate or advanced secondary level

• Evidence of effective teaching and strong musicianship

• Excellent conducting, rehearsal, and organizational skills

• Ability to teach courses in choral conducting, choral literature, and choral sequencing

Additional Considerations:
• Earned doctorate (DMA, PhD, or equivalent) in Choral Conducting, Vocal Performance, Music Education, or a related discipline
• Collegiate teaching experience in applied voice and choral conducting
• Experience directing collegiate choral ensembles
• Evidence of successful student mentorship and recruitment
• Familiarity with current best practices in vocal pedagogy and choral music education
