Job Summary: Under the supervision of the Jail Nurse Supervisor, performs nursing care to inmates at the Detention Center. Is responsible for compliance with all current and future state, federal, and local laws and regulation.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Develop and manage an expanded Medicated Assisted Treatment Program (MAT) to include induction of new participants. Coordinate with the Medical Director and MAT Provider to develop and implement the required policies and procedures.
  2. Coordinate with community treatment providers and Bismarck/Burleigh Public Health Department to continuing care upon release for MAT participants.
  3. Coordinate with North Dakota Health and Human Services Substance Use Disorder (SUD) voucher program to identify eligible program participants.
  4. Coordinate with the NDSU ONE program to provide opioid risk reduction efforts.
  5. Perform sick call duties.
  6. Perform medication passes.
  7. Ability to exercise discretion and caution when interacting with inmates in a safe manner.
  8. Conduct health assessments, lab draws and communicable diseases screenings.
  9. Provides nursing services, treatments and diagnostic and preventative procedures appropriate for inmate care and safety; interprets physicians’ orders; administers prescribed medication; applies surgical dressings and bandages; provides emergency first aid care; checks and records vital signs; instructs inmates concerning in charge planning; observes signs and symptoms during sick call; reports reactions to treatments and medications as well as changes in the inmates’ emotional or physical condition.
  10. Under the supervision of the Jail Nurse Supervisor, directs and guides patient teaching and activities that commensurate with his/her education and demonstrated competencies.
  11. Serving as a liaison with medical providers to schedule outside medical appointments regarding the medical care of the inmate populations.
  12. Assisting in the tracking of equipment and supply needs.
  13. Maintains accurate medical records of inmates in the Detention Center.
  14. Responds to emergencies throughout the facility; injury and illness; performs CPR when needed.
  15. Perform crisis intervention functions, suicide prevention, recognizing abnormal behavior and taking appropriate action.
  16. Refer to or consult with other health providers in person and on the phone.
  17. Notify supervisor and complete written report for any medical or security incidents.
  18. Performs other duties as required and assigned.
Requirements:
  1. Must be a United States citizen, 18 years of age or older; high school graduate or GED certified.
  2. Graduation from an Accredited School of Nursing
  3. Preference will be given to those who have nursing experience in a correctional facility.
  4. Must have a current ND LPN or RN unencumbered License.
  5. Must possess a valid driver’s license with no serious traffic violations, no felony or misdemeanor convictions.
