Job Description
The Franciscan Renewal Center is a nonprofit Catholic retreat center and home to Our Lady of the Angels Church, located in Paradise Valley. Founded in 1951 by the Order of Friars Minor, we seek to follow in the footsteps of Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi with our commitment to our mission of renewing lives through spiritual growth, healing and transformation, and service to others. The FRC staff and volunteers are passionate about our shared work that ultimately provides a peaceful and welcoming experience for all who come here.
We serve our mission by providing:
• Retreats, meeting and conference space for faith-based and nonprofit organizations
• Joyful worship with Franciscan friars at Our Lady of the Angels Church, and additional support to our dynamic faith community with faith formation and spiritual education
• Service and outreach programs for the poor and vulnerable
• Counseling, spiritual direction, and support groups
Our Spiritual Direction Ministry provides spiritual direction for all who request it regardless of whether or not they are affiliated with the church or retreat center. This ministry currently has an opportunity for a Program Coordinator to oversee and provide administrative support to the ministry including coordinating spiritual direction, providing ongoing training and development to the Spiritual Directors, and maintaining relationships with the Diocese and other Spiritual Direction organizations. Additionally, this person will be a full integrated ministry member providing Spiritual Direction to assigned Directees, some of which are included in scheduled hours of coordinator role and some are in addition to and outside of the coordinator role.
The Spiritual Direction Coordinator is a part-time role, approximately 15 hours per week, typically over 3 days, and schedule might fluctuate to accommodate evening and weekend needs.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Responsible for the coordination, oversight and management of the Spiritual Direction Ministry
o Respond to all requests for spiritual direction
o Coordinate and confirm initial correspondence between spiritual director and potential directee
o Maintain monthly records including the number of spiritual direction sessions and monthly room fees from directors
o Schedule and coordinate spiritual directors for scheduled and private retreats
o Submit check requests for spiritual directors offering direction on retreats
o Coordinate ongoing development for spiritual directors
o Keep up to date records on liability insurance and individual evaluations for each spiritual director
o Communicate regularly with spiritual directors between meetings
o Maintain a committee of current Spiritual Directors to interview and provide input in selection of new spiritual directors
• Schedule and facilitate three annual meetings for Casa spiritual director community providing opportunities for community building and participation in ongoing professional growth
• Promote the Spiritual Direction Ministry to the FRC community and the community at large
o Attend staff meetings and occasional event, remain in communication with staff
o Attend meetings of Spiritual Direction Rising and communicate with Diocesan staff regarding promotion of spiritual direction
• Develop and implement the Spiritual Direction Strategic Plan in coordination with FRC strategic planning
• Maintain spiritual direction library and resources
• Participate as a member of the Spiritual Direction team and provide Spiritual Direction to assigned Directees
QUALIFICATIONS
• Completion of a recognized Spiritual Direction Training program and 5 or more years’ experience working as a Spiritual Director
• Certificate in Spiritual Direction supervision or willingness to complete within first weeks of employment.
• M.A. in Theology, Pastoral Care, or similar, preferred
REQUIREMENTS
• Strong and effective interpersonal, relational and communication skills
• Ability to effectively demonstrate compassion in actions and communication; ability to accompany people where they are
• Self-directed, able to complete responsibilities independently with minimal supervision
• Ability and willingness to work collaboratively within the Casa organization and with other local spiritual direction efforts
• Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
• Ability to manage multiple tasks timely and efficiently
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Word and Outlook
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Commitment to the mission and values of the FRC
• Ability to maintain Safe Environment Training protocols
• This position is on-site typically during standard office hours over 3 days a week, as well as when providing Spiritual Direction as desired by the Directee. Occasional evenings and weekends are required.
• Familiarity with content of Casa web site pertaining to Spiritual Direction
• Working knowledge of Franciscan spirituality along with willingness to learn more
