This role sits at the intersection of payroll operations and accounting, supporting a mission-driven organization with complex, multi-state payroll and compliance requirements. You will take ownership of end-to-end payroll processing while ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to federal, state, and local regulations. Working closely with accounting, benefits, and people operations teams, you will play a key role in maintaining data integrity across payroll, tax filings, and financial records. The position requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment. You will also collaborate with external providers such as payroll vendors to resolve issues and ensure compliance. In this role, you will be responsible for managing payroll operations, ensuring compliance with tax regulations, and supporting accounting and HR-related processes to guarantee accuracy and efficiency across all payroll activities.
- Process semi-monthly and occasional off-cycle payroll runs with a high degree of accuracy
- Review and support quarterly and year-end federal, state, and local payroll tax filings
- Partner with payroll providers to investigate and resolve tax filing issues
- Manage payroll tax registrations and ensure compliance of withholding and unemployment accounts
- Collaborate with benefits and HR teams to ensure accurate employee benefits processing
- Monitor employee timesheets and expense submissions, ensuring timely reimbursements
- Conduct onboarding training for timesheet systems and compliance procedures
- Perform periodic audits to ensure compliance with DCAA timesheet standards
- Support general accounting activities including reconciliations, reporting, and financial close processes
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and operational efficiencies
The ideal candidate brings strong payroll and accounting expertise, particularly in multi-state environments, combined with a high level of accuracy, organization, and compliance knowledge.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 5+ years of payroll processing experience, including multi-state payroll compliance
- 5+ years of accounting experience (GL, reconciliations, AP, invoicing, financial close)
- Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations
- Hands-on experience with ADP payroll systems
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel for reporting and analysis
- Strong attention to detail and high accuracy in financial data handling
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet strict deadlines
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to research and resolve payroll issues independently
- Experience with payroll certifications (FPC or CPP) is a plus or willingness to pursue them
- Familiarity with Unanet or similar ERP/timekeeping systems is a plus
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across finance, HR, and external vendors
- Competitive annual salary range: $65,000 – $90,000
