Description:

PRN status

Day shift is 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Saturday and Sunday 8:00 AM to 12 noon

Hours vary with need

Some weekends are anticipated.

The Pharmacy Technician works under general supervision in performing pharmacy related duties as assigned by the pharmacist. This work is carried out with the direction of the pharmacist to whom the employee is directly responsible and includes working in an Outpatient and Inpatient pharmacy setting. RMH Pharmacy Technicians have the ability to grow and develop their skills through a career ladder. The career ladder contains levels of sterile compounding and certifications. The Pharmacy Department encourages the staff through education and development.

Requirements:

Knowledge & Experience

Skills-

  • Possess the necessary interpersonal and communication skills required to interact with patients, coworkers and other health professionals.

Knowledge-

  • Must be able to work in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Education-

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent. Degree or non-degree college level study or health trade vocational training. Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification required. If not certified at time of hire, must obtain certification within 6 months of hire.

Experience-

  • Previous pharmacy experience preferred, but not required.

Authority and Accountability

  • Must be able to work with and properly handle different types of people.

Aptitudes

  • Must be of good morale character
  • Must meet hospital physical requirements and drug screen.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Reports to the Director of Pharmacy. Responsible for knowledge and application of hospital-wide compliance policies, as well as, compliance issues for specific areas of accountability.

QUALITY ASSURANCE-KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Ensure accuracy when performing all medication related duties.
  2. Restocks all automated dispensing systems and other carts with medications below the par level.
  3. Purchasing supplies and medications at the best cost/quality available.
  4. Resolves medication discrepancies in a timely manner.
  5. Fills prescriptions for outpatients under supervision of a pharmacist.
  6. Answers the telephone and doorbell promptly.
  7. Makes stat delivers to patient care areas when requested.
  8. Maintains appropriate inventory levels of supply to all medication rooms, as well as, performing monthly inspections.
  9. Keeps the pharmacy clean and well organized.
  10. Monitors all medication samples for offices and accurately distributes.
  11. Utilize Cerner for dispensing physician's orders and revenue reports.
  12. Operates and maintains specialized equipment such as automated systems and Baxter IV pumps.
  13. Organizes and prioritizes work assignments.
  14. Enters charges for patient medications accurately.
  15. Identifies and replaces outdated medications.
  16. Delivers prescription paper to all prescription printers in a timely manner.
  17. Unit-doses tablets from bulk bottles and labels appropriately.
  18. Rotates stock in Anesthesia carts daily.
  19. Reconciles medications used in Anesthesia Narcotic lock boxes as needed.

PUBLIC RELATIONS

  • Communicates with doctors and nurses on drug back-orders, substitutions, etc.
  • Takes appropriate action in problem situations to offset adverse effects.
  • Projects a professional and positive attitude regarding the hospital.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Seeks opportunities for self development and identifies areas of improvement.
  • Maintains State Certification from ISBOP.
  • Observes Hospital dress guidelines and wears ID Badge.
  • Provides proper notification for absence and tardiness and is punctual for start of scheduled time.
  • Participates in emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation procedures and internal/external disaster plans and procedures in accordance with departmental responsibilities.
  • Maintains equipment assigned to department. Reports malfunctions and orders service as necessary.
  • Complies with hospital policies and procedures.
  • Completes projects and assignments on a timely basis.

CONTINUOUS QUALITY IMPROVEMENT

  • Participates in the Continuous Quality Improvement Program under the direction of the Pharmacy Director to meet stated goals and objectives of the Continuous Quality Improvement Program by:
  • Brings potential problems to the Director of Pharmacy
  • Assists in data collection.
  • Suggests solutions to problems.
  • Emphasizes, supports and is committed to CQI practices and processes.
  • Takes action to assure CQI within areas of responsibility.
